Well, well, well! We have a new art quilter joining us! Wow! Thanks so much for posting your quilts Anneliese. I
love the title "Plowboys vs. Cowboys". <g> I can see your sand, sea and sky piece hanging in a two
story vestibule. Beautiful! "Brickette" made me giggle too...but I do see why you might not be as enthused
about it. Perhaps you can add something to the pale centers perk it up to the intensity of the surrounding pieces. I
bet you'll get lots of suggestions from this group! Welcome....come visit us when you can. KJ "flytyer37"

[quote:2cd79cb57c]In the meantime, the kid is working at Joann's and making quilts. She's scary good at that. She's
just done one about Nebraska that has rolling fields, circle irrigation, blue skies, interspaced with a fabric that
looks like a turn-of-the-century wallpaper. Incredible. I wanna see a picture... This is the kid speaking at my dad's
request; the quilt that he's thinking of is not about Nebraska. It's called Cowboys vs. Plowboys

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m128/annalizard/P1000031.jpg And this is apparently my daddy's favorite. I call it
'Brickette' because I hate it and want to set it on fire. My mom convinced me to do the pale yellow, they look white,
squares in the middle of the circles. The pattern is from a book---quilting without triangles or something like that. I
made it when I was 15. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m128/annalizard/Erin_1.jpg Anneliese [/quote:2cd79cb57c]

Hi Patti, thanks for the good words. Don't worry, Red Riding Hood is alive and well. The problem is, she wouldn't do the
quilt by the rules, LOL. The thing just refused to fit into the requirements. It's by far my favorite project ever and
I'm having a blast working on it. Matter of fact, having to finish this project for tonight has left me with no time for
fun work for two weeks or more. Bleh. I'll get back to RRH next week. Yay! Sunny Patti wrote: [quote:45fd7bd9bb]Wow,

THanks all for celebrating with me =) It's been a wild week and about to be another one (starting my longer day at work
in less than an hour)...it's hectic keeping up with working in the shop (finally start my "reduced" hours this
week -- not a minute too soon as far as my energy levels are concerned) and subbing jobs, as well as volunteering at the
local library (a commitment I made over a year ago and refuse to give up) and now doing the church website (from
scratch), AND "secretarial" duties for DH at the college (turn about for all the papers he checked, copies he
ran, folders he filed stuff in, etc. for me when I was teaching full time). Spent last night personalizing campaign

Thanks Kate! My cousin got all the math genes in the family; she's an electrical engineer! I'm good with history,
writing, art, all the stuff I think is fun! But happily, I have a good teacher and I think I may be getting the hang

have to worry about it anymore. -- Debi Chaos, panic and disorder ... my work here is done. "Kate G."

You can do it! One other tip in addition to those in an earlier post....use Stitch N Tear under your applique. It
stabilizes the whole thing, and just rips off the back when you are finished! It keeps the flag fabric from slipping,
and keeps it from being "poked" down into the machine. Good luck.... "off kilter

Don't know about the award winners but our local shop which specializes in reproduction fabrics is doing very well. When
the shop openned last year the owner knew she had to specialize in something to standout from the many shops in the
Chicago area. She chose reproduction fabrics and now has quilters from all over Chicago driving to the store. The other
stores had mostly gone very bright with their fabrics. Even if they have the Civil War fabrics in the store the brights
over power the more muted fabrics. It is hard to choose fabrics for a Civil War quilt with all of those brights around.
The wow factor of the hand dyes might be winning the prizes but in years to come I think it will be the more traditional
quilts that are still enjoyed. Can you imagine living with some of those bold quilts for years? And many of the art
quilts just won't last more than one generation. "Quilts" with strings hanging off them aren't designed to
last. I put the word quilts in quotes because although they are technically three layers I don't think of them as true
quilts. They are fiber art invading the quilting world. Off my soapbox. Susan On 5 Oct 2006 11:09:48 -0700,

gorgeous and drooly array of fabric on the market. Rich colors and subtle, bold designs and Civil War repros. But as I
get more into the "Quilting World" and look at more magazines and websites of contest winners, I'm becoming
painfully aware that in recent years the trend is away from those gorgeous prints. Apparently, most of the big
"winners" use hand dyes and batiks. Not necessarily solids, but those lovely swirly colors or gradations. Is
this a trend, a fad, a movement? What do you folks think? Is the day of quilts made with gorgeous retail prints that win
big contests over? (Please understand, I don't see myself entering contests. I'm just curious) Sunny[/quote:f484d8ee82]

Kellie, I hate to burst your bubble because you are obviously so excited about this, but speaking from experience, the
answer is no. You might get a four-patch pieced, but no way will it get sandwiched, and I'd personally be amazed if
you got them to piece the four-patch in the first place. You'll have kids poking each other with needles, stabbing
themselves and bleeding on their project. Frame with basted wholecloth to try, absolutely, in groups of four and with
supervision. You WILL get more stuff done in each session as you work the kinks out of your presentation tho. Lisa

Thanks to all for your nice comments. The ravens are my next step in attempting to design some art type things myself.
The postcard swap was the first (Thank you Leslie!). The funny part is that the first "raven", was supposed
to be a crow.<g> I made a postcard using the bird I drew and sent it to my crow-savvy best friend and she
thought it looked more like a raven! So my two little quilts became Raven 1 and 2, instead of Crow 1 and 2.
Obviously drawing is NOT my strong suit. I guess I'll chalk it up to artistic license.... -- Donna

Well there actually was I just didn't do a very good job of describing it. The template was a square cut in half on the
diagonal. So each half only had two seams. Sewing the triangles together then sewing the squares together was a piece of
cake. Sewing the pieces of fabric to make the triangle was a nightmare. But you're right, I miscounted on the number of
seams. Here is a link to the pattern. You can see what I'm talking about if you look at the template pattern. I love the
pattern as long as I don't have to make it. lol. Mika "Pati Cook" <plhbc@mindspring.com> wrote in

I would love for you to come over and show me how you cut the pieces. I can use all the help I can get right now. I
don't have any software yet. What I did was print the template from the website, resize it to the size I wanted then
make multiple copies of that. I have a copy machine/printer so making copies isn't a problem. The biggest problem is
just getting the template sized correctly. Mika "Witchy Stitcher" <noone@nowhere.com> wrote in message

piece would be easy to attach especially with an oversized piece. Hmmph. Not for me. After I got the seam sewn and went
to press it into place, well it always went wonky in the opposite direction of what it was supposed to go. Did you find
the pattern on Quilters Cache? That is where I got it and used the template from there. You can see how the template is
actually two pieces. I'm glad you liked it enough to make one. That is a real compliment. Thank you. Mika "Susan

Well darn it. I thought sure making 4 blocks that had to be sewn together into one big one would qualify, especially
since I had to rip so frickin many times. lol. Next time I think I'll just do flying geese or square in a square or
something that is supposed to be easy. Oh wait, I said that about this block since each section only had two seams. Oh
well. Oh yeah. I am left-handed and learned how to crochet from a right-handed person. lol. It was a very difficult
task but we finally figured out that if she sat in front of me facing me it was like mirror image and so easy to figure
out then. I swore I would never try to learn anything like that from a right-handed person again but of course that was
one I just couldn't stick with since right-handed persons far outnumber left-handed persons. lol. Mika

Thanks Kate. I don't have the "add an inch" ruler but I guess that will be on my wish list now. I did oversize
my pieces but I think the trouble I was having was because of the angle of the seams. Somehow I was cutting my piece in
the wrong direction so I ended up having to rip it multiple times. Several times I ended up just getting new pieces that
were REALLY oversized. You can email me or post directions explaining anytime you like. I'm always open to learning new

is really a piece of cake! I'd be happy to try to explain how I do it. I've taught a class or two and my students

Thanks Louise. I had been putting off trying pp for a long time. I bought one of Carol Doak's books last year and just
could never get the nerve to try it. Well I finally decided to take the plunge and chose that particular pattern for
two reasons. One, it was pretty. Two, it only had three pieces, two seams. Seemed simple enough. I cut the pieces well
oversized in the correct shape, but they still wouldn't work. I finally ended up just cutting huge pieces just to get
them to fit then trim them down to the correct size. Someday I may give it a try again but not for a very long time.

first time of paper piecing came about from a hug that I signed up for. I made a practice block, then I found out that I
had to shrink the block. From a 12 inch block down to a 6 inch. Not knowing any better ( a copier would have been faster
but did I go that route nope) I resized the block by hand. That particular block now lives with Karen in her hug she got
awhile ago. Since then I love paper piecing though I do tend to forget about using a copier. Plus I love Carol Doaks

paper piecing to those who love it and have the patience for it. If anyone wants to see this piece of art it can be seen

"simple" pattern that had only TWO, get that, TWO seams. The final block consists of 4 blocks put together.
Simple right? WRONG!!! To put together a 12 1/2 inch block of the four smaller blocks it required stitching a total of
12 seams. I worked on this stupid block for over 18, yes 18 hours. I should have just given up and threw it in the trash
but I chose to be stubborn. So I continued to cut and stitch and rip and cut and stitch and rip and stitch and rip and
rip and rip and stitch and rip. And well I think you get the picture. I don't think there was but one seam that I didn't

Well, it did end up absolutely fine. It might have been a simply *section*, but there is an awful lot of matching in
that block. It's very pretty. FPP in sections is really not the way to start. There are all sorts of considerations
with those. Could I ask you just to try one more *whole* block experiment - either to prove to yourself that you hate
it! or to find there might be potential. I'm not saying this because I love it (which I do - mostly!), but because it
is so very useful. Just draw a straightforward square in a square onto the FPP paper, (perhaps a square in a square in
a square to make it more interesting - no more difficult). Number it from the centre, and have a go. .. In message

Debra -- you really need to try again -- with directions that are a little more helpful. Please don't let one bad
experience sour you on what can be an EASY way to get perfect points on challenging blocks. I'd be happy to offer how
I do it -- and I think you'll find it really isn't as horrible as you experienced.... Kate in MI

http://community.webshots.com/album/207411718oOUQih I bow to your great PP klutziness. I tried PP once myself. A
simple block consisting of 4 pieces. Directions are lay the fabric piece on the paper, sew along the line on the paper,
continue until block is done. Easy right? Not happening here I can tell you. Could not get the second piece sewn
right no matter what I did. Gave up on it after the first frustrating hour and I will never try paper piecing again.
