matches the silk devore velvet I'm working with - I bought 2 skeins of Crystal Palace Chenille in bronze-black combo.
Yummy - now what quickie scarf to knit. And I think it'll need some large crystal beads at the ends. Donna was very
good - and got a nice skein of yarn to crochet long fingerless glove/cuff things - with the pattern we bought. And

plain ole' Anchor. And, I have metallics on hand (cause I found that box in the stash). And the lovely "Autumn
Blush" Belfast hand dye I bought for the Sweet Potato Vine will go to this instead, cause I found some nice
"Flax" Edinburgh for that - deciding to stay with 36 ct instead of 32 ct. Dang. More to do. But, I'm

is my guess but have never seen that size. Donna You could get a 3/8" hardwood dowel from your hardware store.
It's roughly equal to a size 13 needle. Cut it to the length you want, stick the ends into a pencil sharpener to make
the basic taper (I use our battery operated one at home), then sand it down ALMOST to a size 12 needle on the body with
very rough sandpaper (a wood file takes off too much and creates a flat surface on your dowel faster than you'd think),
and then switching to finer sandpaper BEFORE you've reached the thickness you want (8.5 mm), and get a smoother finished
surface on the body of the needle and tips with finer sandpaper to finish sanding it down to 8.5 mm. Apply a LIGHT
coating of linseed (now only available in the art supply section of Wal-Mart for me) or other wood working oil to a shop
towel or paper towel and rub it lightly over the needles, then let them sit overnight to soak that in. Use a white
unscented candle to wax any rough spots you may find when using the needles. It takes me an hour to make two 12-inch
needles (10 is too short, 14 too long for my liking) or one 6-inch crochet hook using dowels. For the crochet hook, you
also need either a Dremel or equal cutting instrument for faster cutting of the hook head, a wood file to make the flat
hand holds near the head of the hook, or more time and a sharp pocket knife to hand carve the whole thing, then you also
have to sandpaper it smooth, oil it, and let it soak in overnight. If using a pocket knife, always point the blade AWAY
from you and make sure there's no one across from you watching, because if you slip, or catch on a knot in the wood,
accidents can happen. Also, when cutting with the Dremel or sanding, wear safely glasses or goggles. Sounds
complicated, but it's really not rocket science, it's knitting, and you need only an approximate in between size set of
needles to change your gauge, so having a slight variation in the size around, as long as it's not 1/4 mm or larger,
won't matter when making your own. I used a 1/4" dowel and got a 6.0 mm set of needles, which is between size 10
(5.75 mm) and 10.5 (6.5 mm) on my Boye needle gauge, which can make a difference if I just can't get the gauge I need
with 10 or 10.5. If you're really creative, you can add decorative clay knobs or simply glue beads to one end of your
needles if you want single points and are afraid your work will slide off the end. Leah [/quote:a9b374ec99] Thanks for
all that information.....I will save this for later as I would love to make my own needles......the prices for good
ones are high....I prefer the wood ones. Donna

Posted by ellice on Mon Oct 23, 2006 3:55 PM    Post subject: Re: Kinda Newbir Lurker - Hi & Help with 2nd Spool Question

Thanks for the welcome. I'm in the midst of setting up my photo pages. And will do as soon as they're done. My
instructor from the wearable art class is making fun of me. I'm taking a "design your own - based on a sloper
(basic fitted custom pattern)" class with her and she keeps asking about the jacket. I had a hard time firming up
what I wanted to do on the back. The jacket is a basic, kind of asymetrical, short jacket, with a mandarin collar.
It's in a deep purple hand-dye, and the artsy insert motifs are from the Laurel Birch "Mythical Horses"
collection in the jewel tones (greens, golds, purple,). I've done some bias strips, the cuffs & collar, in a really
nice hand-dye that is tiny little metallic squares - over a painted/mottled background of similar colors, and then found
some curly-ques in the same colorway for some other stripping. There is a fussy-cut pocket on the front with a specific
motif. The back has seuparate cutes of the smaller horses so they come up the bakce and then meet one from over the
shoulder. But, I wasn't happy until I finally decided to go ahead and do a mountain/hills kind of background - raw edge
curved piecing, then overlay the horses, and well, there's some organza sheer shoved in there to give some distance and
layering effect. Then the instructor and some of the others from the wearable art club critiqued my layout - insisting
on the organze, and tha I add ribbons - so I've found a bunch of ribbon which I think I'll do some edgine with. The
lining is the current debate - I'm not quilting the jacket. I did have some oriental fabric to line it with - for fun -
but now am thinking it won't slip on well, so am contemplating some novelty silk that I saw at G-Street - read this
pretty cheap. Vs lining it with boring but nice rayon. It just took my mental block time to figure out to do the entire
scen kind of thing with the piecing for under the horses on the back - but it's much better than just horses floating up
the main garment fabric. I'm sure I'll let you know when either my putting the artsy layout together goes awry or it's
all done... Ellice in No Va On 10/23/06 10:17 AM, "Roberta Zollner" <rl.zollner@gmx.net.old> wrote:

try not to babble too much...I've much to learn in the quilting arts. Started quitling after my DM passed away, and her
sister - who's been an avid quilter kept bugging me to do it, and honestly, I really had been lusting after playing with
some fabric - so I got hooked. When she got a quilt in at AQS, Nashville, went with her, had a blast, took great
classes, etc. The rest is just an expansive tale of stash building to keep my other needlework stash company. TIA for
any help, Ellice in VA [/quote:0e3b8b8d09]

this magazine work has been a learning experience LOL I have learnt that I prefer smaller projects I can cope with PP
but hate joining the sections (I have taken to hand basting so they always go together nicely straight away instead of
praying the line up and having to undo machine basting) I enjoy hand work especially reverse appliqué I love art quilts
I need several projects going at once to keep me happy but I also need to get stuff finished every now and then - I
hate not being able to show anything I have done lately so I am going to start finishing a UFO so as to have a practice
piece to get my machine quilting going before starting the important work - it will help I hope ;-) x-stitch, crochet
and knitting projects are totally ignored for this - the floss is perfect for art quit embellishments! -- Jessamy In

of badly for you. I know how hard it is to finish something rather than starting something new though. I have the same
problem and I'm trying to overcome it too. I've got about 4 tops to quilt, a BOM started but not up to date, two other
quilt tops started but not finished, fabrics for a candy jar quilt from a fabric swap, and several PIGs. And this is
just the quilty projects. I'm not mentioning the cross stitch and embroidery projects. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I have found that it is a bowl to put pieces (short ends) of thread in. The bowl may have a pincushion insert and it may
also have a lid. Could some tell me some history about this or where I might research it further on my own. What did
the term 'orts' come from and what does it mean? Why would you save the short pieces of thread? Can you save different
colors in the same 'orts bowl'? Any info would be helpful. Thanks, Barbara Thomas [/quote:52d1de6e08] There are a few
woodworkers out there making "orts" boxes or bowls. An member from my ANG chapter has a company with her DH,
and they make laying tools and orts bowls, many with little pincushion tops. Orts are the little thread cuttings which
seem to trail all around, over, under needleworkers. And, needleworkers, like knitters, and quilters - well, we all love
our specialty gadgets (scissor fobs, neat laying tools, frames, and sometimes orts bowls). Personally, I have a little
4" collapsible mesh cube that I use. It folds flat, and I keep it with the stitching stuff, pull it out, and have
my own little porta-orts & sundries mini-trash receptacle. Even have the 5" or 6" size for knitting or
quilting scraps. But, I do know people that buy the lovely hand-made orts bowls - just not me. The ones with a cushion
on top that let you stick needles in are pretty convenient. Anyhow - they're seen for sale at some of the Needlework
sales, some LNS, etc. ellice
