OK, I'm ready to spit nails and I can hear whomever is reading this saying to yourselves, "What -- Tia is going to
post a long rant? How very unusual"! As some of you might remember, my father passed away in early August. I'm
not doing so well dealing with his death and all the paperwork crap I am having to wade through to get stuff settled
because I am his Executor. I am a signer on his checking account and the little money he had in there was his Social
Security deposit and the money MediCare sends him so he can pay Mayo Clinic (DO NOT get me started on those F*#$(*$
anal orifices). Anyway, I called and canceled his credit cards by the middle of August. The Visa card person I
spoke with said I should just write on his statement that he had no estate or assets and send it back to them. I did
this on about 20 August. Yesterday I get a letter AND some court papers from these Visa DI*KWADS telling me how sorry
they are that my father has passed away and when am I going to send them the $600+ dollars outstanding on my father's
account!! Excuse my profanity but I DO NOT NEED THIS SHIT! Enclosed with this lovely letter -- which by the way
also said I should sent them the name, etc. of the attorney who is handling my father's estate -- enclosed is also a
court document to be used so they can take legal action to get their &#$*&$#^$% $600 back! I am not a happy
camper nor am I terribly emotionally stable right now (probably why I went on so long kvetching about the whole hunting
thing which I KNEW better than to do -- VBS -- sorry to everyone about that but there have been some extenuating
circumstances). Anyway, I phone the *%#*(%^ credit card company yet again to tell them that if there is any change
left after I send Social Security back their money and I pay the idiots at Mayo their Medicare money, I'll be happy to
send Visa a check for whatever is left! By this time I am in tears I am so freaking pissed off. Georgia -- the
woman I am talking to at Visa -- is lucky she's somewhere in Omaha because I might up and throttle her just for the
hell of it -- tells me to do EXACTLY what the first person told me to do!! I am supposed to write that there is no
estate and no assets on the court document and send it back to them because Papa was the only signer on the card and
Visa will log it as an unrecoverable debt or something like that. I'm sure some bean counter in the money dept. was
just doing his or her job and was required to send out all this paperwork. I KNOW I am overreacting but hell's bells
I truly am about at the end of my rope. I'm even considering going to the Dr. and asking for some happy pills because
this in and out of depression crap has gone on long enough. It usually takes me a couple of weeks, NOT months VBS!
The kitties have been wonderful and love on me all the time and that helps some. DH is a total engineer and an
absolute lost cause when it comes to anything remotely resembling sympathy. His response (for 35 year now) has been
to say "Well, there's nothing you can do about it so deal with it and move on". Then he gives me a nice pat
on the head -- I'm serious, that's what he does in this type of situation -- he pats me on the damn head just like I'm
one of the cats! NOW is when I really, really miss Suzi (the run away from home, go walkabout and get lost) Dog -- my
crotchety, ill tempered old lady dog. Even more than the kitties, she was ALWAYS ready to just sit by me and follow me
around and give me slime kisses when I was really down or upset about something. OK -- I'm better now. Sorry about
this but I really don't have anyone else to talk to. Janet lost her dad a few years ago but she really liked her dad
so it's difficult for her to understand how I feel because I didn't like my dad. Of my three friends here in town, one
has lost her father but it was years ago and the other two have never lost anyone. We were all at lunch and I told
them just to ignore me if I got too grumpy because I was not doing too well. The two who have not lost anyone wanted
to know why I wasn't too too well and I said DUH -- my dad died two weeks ago is why. One of them mentioned that I
had been having a pretty rotten time the last few years. My DBro passed away Feb. 2003 and Mikey Fat Cat crossed the
Rainbow Bridge that summer. Spring of 2004 was Janets house fire and then that Summer brought the death of my VDMIL
and Suzi (the run away from home, go walkabout and get lost) Dog within a week of each other. Then in Nov., Steven
(the SonIL) had his stroke -- did I ever tell you all that he flat lined TWICE and they had to zap his heart to bring
him back? I can't remember WHAT bad stuff happened in 2005 -- oh yeah -- DD was in a really bad way and ready to
divorce Steven so I had to go to Lizard Land and try to mediate but at least nobody died and then all that lovely
stuff with V started up! This year is Papa and there's still three and a half months left. OY -- I should be a
screaming lunatic by now! WAIT -- maybe I am -- LOLOL. Sorry to go on for so long. If anyone has made it this far,
you have my condolences! Sheena might not like me but she has me pegged as far as my tendency to "go on"
:-). I do tend to get on a roll don't I -- LOLOL? OK -- enough -- thanks and ((((RCTN)))). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

black or blue new CAPS practice jerseys, a couple of blanks (one with Montreal socks - our old pal Zed), and a speedy
blonde in a red Slovakian olympic jersey (can you say Peter Bondra?). It was pretty fun. Our friend is going to manage
the pro-shop at Ballston, and was there doing some training at this shop (evidently the ownership/management at Ashburn
will be operating the rink that the CAPS actually own, and the same company with the Ashburn pro-shop is going to run
that one). Then the COMCAST tv camera and some unknown reporter came in - of course the camera guy used to be our back-
up (my "b" team) goalie. It's always a small world. And then the Wash Post reporter came in. And then the
WashCaps website news guy. So, the fans - us - were outnumbered by the media. A few women using the new gym upstairs
came by - they were all dressed in their tennis togs. After drills the guys played some shinny (4 on 4). It was great
- they were clearly having so much fun. And wow - the hands on Zubrus and Bondra. Oh, who was there - Bondra, Dainus
Zubrus, Chris Clark (nice boy from Connecticut, who skates with Ovechkin), Richie Zednik, Brian Pothier (new guy from
Montreal?), Shaone Morrison, Steve Werner (local boy made good), and Ben Clymer. Plus the goalies. Best pick-up I've
seen - ever! And of course, after one team scored, no one would take a rest until they tied it up. At the end, when
they did the "show down" - 1 on 1 break aways, and then started cleaning up. DH had asked if we wanted to
hang and say hi - me - not really - as I look kind of a wreck, etc. But, as we're hanging I hear Olie asking (yelling)
for the puck bucket - which is right near us. So, DH got to take the bucket out, walking over to the goal with it (in
his shorts and boat shoes of course) - say hi to the guys. Very cute - like little kids -with pucks piled in Olie's
glove, and inside peoples jerseys). So, that was our fun extra outing. And by then - no breakfast - but dim sum
instead and I dragged DH into G Street Fabrics. Had to share. It's so refreshing to know that some pro-athletes are
actually joyful playing their game. And still down to earth. Funnies comment of the day - some lady was upstairs
working out in the gym when all the guys came in early to work out before getting on the ice. Her comment "my dream
has come true" - she was pretty much overcome by the fine shape of those sharing the gym with her.

making mini albums for my sis and SIL for Christmas. Using the same paper, cardstock, etc for each, same titles for
pages on both. Just changing some of the journaling. Once I get one done, the other shoudl go quickly. The albums will
go in AOL boxes. Already have the 2 AOL boxes covered, still workign on embellishing them. Gotta figure out closeures.
After you put paper on them, the magnetic thing just doesn't work. LOL I'm hoping today to pick up a mini album kit I
saw at Wal Mart several weeks ago. It's this really cute boyish album, about 4" x 4" I guess. Has the mini
album with all the embellishments, etc. I'm going to do it up for my Mom to put in pics of my nephew. (Christmas
present.) He lives in the same town as them, so spends quite a bit of time at "Nana & Papa's". Needless
to say, Mom has quite a few pics of him! LOL Then there's the idea I had the other morning for Christmas gifts. We're
going to take alllllllllll of the digital pics we have, sort them by year, rename pics as needed (maybe), then burn them
to CD's. I'm not sure who will get them, but certainly our parents. I imagine we'll do them for my siblings, too.
Once my Dad gets them, he may not share! LOL (Just a little attached to his grandkids.) So I need to get started on
sorting them. Scary thought since we have digital pics going back to 2001. Of course, I still have my former kitty
Bagheera's album to finish, and DD's first album. (Both spiral bound.) We won't discuss where I am in the rest of DD
and DS's pics. LOL Plus tryign to start planning DH's BotCon album. That's going to the toughy! Plus needing to start
our album for our Mexico trip we took this summer. Plus another mini book kit I started at my Sept. stamp camp. (Yes,
Kenda, it's still not done.) I gotta stop getting ideas for projects. LOL -- Deb in AR - Desert Rat at heart!

release the prisoners because, I suppose, no judge was going to get a big enough cut to stick his head out that far for
the consiglieris to chop off in a courtroom. Reading this in the Charleston Newsless Courier, our local ad rag, I
called our cops and explained that, sometimes, I like to carry a few extra bucks around to buy stuff, mostly computer
toys, I like to buy. I wanted the cops to tell me how much money was too much money! Obviously, $480,000 in small
bills was over some imaginary line, too much money for mere citizens of America to possess without some IRS bureaucrat's
permission. Unable to tell me how much the limit was before they arrested me for no reason, he referred me to his
supervisor Lt. I just couldn't get any cop to tell me where that line was....because there is no line....It's not
illegal to possess cash....YET!...but they're working on that, too. Hell, those guys on the train MIGHT have been going

Hey! You religious pervert. I've got a little Bible story for you! It goes like: About 2000 years ago in a dusty,
hot, little village Jesus comes bopping down the road with the usual discs. in tow. He comes upon a large, loud and
angry crowd of guys in their bath robes, holding stones. A woman is tied to a nearby post, and Jesus eyes her, then
the crowd, then the stones, and sez: "Oh, I know; let ye who are without sin cast the first stone." About
that time a little old lady elbows her way through the crowd. She runs up to the poor women tied to the post, picks up
a large rock and bashes the woman's brains out. A great hush comes over the crowd as Jesus looks first at the women
and then at the little old lady. Then he goes, "You know, sometimes you really piss me off Mom " Bob

of the all too rare public officials, reporters, and others who spoke truth to the dismally corrupt power of Bill and
Hill Clinton's political machine -- some at risk to their careers, others at risk to their lives. A few points to note:
- Those corporatist media reporters who attempted to report the story often found themselves muzzled; some even lost
their jobs. The only major dailies that consistently handled the story well were the Wall Street Journal and the
Washington Times. - Nobody on this list has gotten rich and many you may not have even heard of. Taking on
the Clintons typically has not been a happy or rewarding experience. At least ten reporters have been fired, transferred
off their beats, resigned, or otherwise gotten into trouble because of their work on the scandals. Whistleblowing is
even less appreciated within the government. One study of whistleblowers found that 232 out of 233 them reported
suffering retaliation; another study found reprisals in about 95% of cases. - Contrary to the popular
impression, the politics of those listed ranges from the left to the right, and from the ideological to the independent.
PUBLIC OFFICIALS MIGUEL RODRIGUEZ was a prosecutor on the staff of Kenneth Starr. His attempts to uncover
the truth in the Vincent Foster death case were repeatedly foiled and he was the subject of planted stories undermining
his credibility and implying that he was unstable. Rodriguez eventually resigned. JEAN DUFFEY: Head of a
joint federal-county drug task force in Arkansas. Her first instructions from her boss: "Jean, you are not to use
the drug task force to investigate any public official." Duffey's work, however, led deep into the heart of the
Dixie Mafia, including members of the Clinton machine and the investigation of the so-called "train deaths."
Ambrose Evans-Pritchard reports that when she produced a star witness who could testify to Clinton's involvement with
cocaine, the local prosecuting attorney, Dan Harmon issued a subpoena for all the task force records, including
"the incriminating files on his own activities. If Duffey had complied it would have exposed 30 witnesses and her
confidential informants to violent retributions. She refused." Harmon issued a warrant for her arrest and friendly
cops told her that there was a $50,000 price on her head. She eventually fled to Texas. The once-untouchable Harmon was
later convicted of racketeering, extortion and drug dealing. BILL DUNCAN: An IRS investigator in Arkansas
who drafted some 30 federal indictments of Arkansas figures on money laundering and other charges. Clinton biographer
Roger Morris quotes a source who reviewed the evidence: "Those indictments were a real slam dunk if there ever was
one." The cases were suppressed, many in the name of "national security." Duncan was never called to
testify. Other IRS agents and state police disavowed Duncan and turned on him. Said one source, "Somebody outside
ordered it shut down and the walls went up." RUSSELL WELCH: An Arkansas state police detective working
with Duncan. Welch developed a 35-volume, 3,000 page archive on drug and money laundering operations at Mena. His
investigation was so compromised that a high state police official even let one of the targets of the probe look through
the file. At one point, Welch was sprayed in the face with poison, later identified by the Center for Disease Control as
anthrax. He would write in his diary, "I feel like I live in Russia, waiting for the secret police to pounce down.
A government has gotten out of control. Men find themselves in positions of power and suddenly crimes become
legal." Welch is no longer with the state police. DAN SMALTZ: Smaltz did an outstanding job
investigating and prosecuting charges involving illegal payoffs to Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy, yet was treated with
disparaging and highly inaccurate reporting by the likes of the David Broder and the NY Times. Espy was acquitted under
a law that made it necessary to not only prove that he accepted gratuities but that he did something specific in return.
On the other hand, Tyson Foods copped a plea in the same case, paying $6 million in fines and serving four years'
probation. The charge: that Tyson had illegally offered Espy $12,000 in airplane rides, football tickets and other
payoffs. In the Espy investigation, Smaltz obtained 15 convictions and collected over $11 million in fines and civil
penalties. Offenses for which convictions were obtained included false statements, concealing money from prohibited
sources, illegal gratuities, illegal contributions, falsifying records, interstate transportation of stolen property,
money laundering, and illegal receipt of USDA subsidies. Incidentally, Janet Reno blocked Smaltz from pursuing leads
aimed at allegations of major drug trafficking in Arkansas and payoffs to the then governor of the state, WJ Clinton.
Espy had become Ag secretary only after being flown to Arkansas to get the approval of chicken king Don Tyson.
DAVID SCHIPPERS was House impeachment counsel and a Chicago Democrat. He did a highly creditable job but since he didn't
fit the right-wing conspiracy theory, the Clintonista media downplayed his work. Thus most Americans don't know that he
told NewsMax, "Let me tell you, if we had a chance to put on a case, I would have put live witnesses before the
committee. But the House leadership, and I'm not talking about Henry Hyde, they just killed us as far as time was
concerned. I begged them to let me take it into this year. Then I screamed for witnesses before the Senate. But there
was nothing anybody could do to get those Senators to show any courage. They told us essentially, you're not going to
get 67 votes so why are you wasting our time." Schippers also said that while a number of representatives looked at
additional evidence kept under seal in a nearby House building, not a single senator did. JOHN CLARKE: When
Patrick Knowlton stopped to relieve himself in Ft. Marcy Park 70 minutes before the discovery of Vince Foster's body, he
saw things that got him into deep trouble. His interview statements were falsified and prior to testifying he claims he
was overtly harassed by more than a score of men in a classic witness intimidation technique. In some cases there were
witnesses. John Clarke has been his dogged lawyer in the witness intimidation case that has been largely ignored by the
media, even when the three-judge panel overseeing the Starr investigation permitted Knowlton to append a 20 page
addendum to the Starr Report. OTHER THE ARKANSAS COMMITTEE: What would later be known as the
Vast Right Wing Conspiracy actually began on the left - as a group of progressive students at the University of Arkansas
had formed the Arkansas Committee to look into Mena, drugs, money laundering, and Arkansas politics. This committee was
the source of some of the important early Clinton stories including those published in the Progressive Review.
CLINTON ADMINISTRATION SCANDALS E-LIST: Moderated by Ray Heizer, this list has been subject to all the idiosyncrasies of
Internet bulletin boards, but it has nonetheless proved invaluable to researchers and journalists.
JOURNALISTS JERRY SEPER of the Washington Times was far and away the best beat reporter of the story,
handling it week after week in the best tradition of investigative journalism. If other reporters had followed Seper's
lead, the history of the Clintons' machine might have been quite different. AMBROSE EVANS-PRITCHARD of the
London Telegraph did a remarkable job of digging into some of the seamiest tales from Arkansas and the Clinton past.
Other early arrivals on the scene were Alexander Cockburn and Jeff Gerth. CHRISTOPHER RUDDY, among other
fine reports on the Clinton scandals, did the best job laying out the facts in the Vince Foster death case.
ROGER MORRIS AND SALLY DENTON wrote a major expose of events at Mena, but at the last moment the Washington Post's brass
ordered the story killed. It was published by Penthouse and later included in Morris' "Partners in Power," the
best biography of the Clintons. OTHERS who helped get parts of the story out included reporters Philip
Weiss, Carl Limbacher, Wes Phelan, David Bresnahan, William Sammon, Liza Myers, Mara Leveritt, Matt Drudge, Jim
Ridgeway, Nat Hentoff, Michael Isikoff, Christopher Hitchens, and Michael Kelly. Also independent investigator Hugh
Sprunt and former White House FBI agent Gary Aldrich. SAM SMITH of the Progressive Review wrote the first
book (Shadows of Hope, University of Indiana Press, 1994) deconstructing the Clinton myth and the Review developed a
major database on the topic. The Clintons, to adapt a line from Dr. Johnson, were not only corrupt, they
were the cause of corruption in others. Seldom in America have so many come to excuse so much mendacity and malfeasance
as during the Clinton years. THE CLINTON LEGACY The Hidden Election USA Today
calls it "the hidden election," in which nearly 7,000 state legislative seats are decided with only minimal
media and public attention. The paper took brief notice because this is the year the state legislatures perform their
most important national function: drawing revised congressional districts based on the most recent census.
But there's another important national story here: further evidence of the disaster that Bill Clinton has been for the
Democratic Party. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Democrats held a 1,542 seat lead in the
state bodies in 1990. As of last November that lead had shrunk to 288. That's a loss of over 1,200 state legislative
seats, nearly all of them under Clinton. Across the US, the Democrats control only 65 more state senate seats than the
Republicans. Further, in 1992, the Democrats controlled 17 more state legislatures than the Republicans.
After November, the Republicans control one more than the Democrats. Not only is this a loss of 9 legislatures under
Clinton, but it is the first time since 1954 that the GOP has controlled more state legislatures than the Democrats
(they tied in 1968). Here's what happened to the Democrats under Clinton, based on our latest figures:
- GOP seats gained in House since Clinton became president: 48 - GOP seats gained in Senate since Clinton
became president: 8 - GOP governorships gained since Clinton became president: 11 - GOP state
legislative seats gained since Clinton became president: 1,254 as of 1998 - State legislatures
taken over by GOP since Clinton became president: 9 - Democrat officeholders who have become Republicans
since Clinton became president: 439 as of 1998 - Republican officeholders who have become
Democrats since Clinton became president: 3 NATIONAL CONF OF STATE LEGISLATURES

under criminal investigation - Most number of witnesses to flee country or refuse to testify -
Most number of witnesses to die suddenly - First president sued for sexual harassment. - First
president accused of rape. - First first lady to come under criminal investigation - Largest
criminal plea agreement in an illegal campaign contribution case - First president to establish a legal
defense fund. - First president to be held in contempt of court - Greatest amount of illegal
campaign contributions - Greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions from abroad - First
president disbarred from the US Supreme Court and a state court * According to our best information, 40
government officials were indicted or convicted in the wake of Watergate. A reader computes that there was a total of 31
Reagan era convictions, including 14 because of Iran-Contra and 16 in the Department of Housing & Urban Development
scandal. 47 individuals and businesses associated with the Clinton machine were convicted of or pleaded guilty to crimes
with 33 of these occurring during the Clinton administration itself. There were in addition 61 indictments or
misdemeanor charges. 14 persons were imprisoned. A key difference between the Clinton story and earlier ones was the
number of criminals with whom he was associated before entering the White House. Using a far looser
standard that included resignations, David R. Simon and D. Stanley Eitzen in Elite Deviance, say that 138 appointees of
the Reagan administration either resigned under an ethical cloud or were criminally indicted. Curiously Haynes Johnson
uses the same figure but with a different standard in "Sleep-Walking Through History: America in the Reagan Years:
"By the end of his term, 138 administration officials had been convicted, had been indicted, or had been the
subject of official investigations for official misconduct and/or criminal violations. In terms of number of officials
involved, the record of his administration was the worst ever." STARR-RAY INVESTIGATION -
Number of Starr-Ray investigation convictions or guilty pleas (including one governor, one associate attorney general
and two Clinton business partners): 14 - Number of Clinton Cabinet members who came under criminal
investigation: 5 - Number of Reagan cabinet members who came under criminal investigation: 4 -

HONOR Here are some of the all too rare public officials, reporters, and others who spoke truth to the
dismally corrupt power of Bill and Hill Clinton's political machine -- some at risk to their careers, others at risk to
their lives. A few points to note: - Those corporatist media reporters who attempted to report the story
often found themselves muzzled; some even lost their jobs. The only major dailies that consistently handled the story
well were the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times. - Nobody on this list has gotten rich and many
you may not have even heard of. Taking on the Clintons typically has not been a happy or rewarding experience. At least
ten reporters have been fired, transferred off their beats, resigned, or otherwise gotten into trouble because of their
work on the scandals. Whistleblowing is even less appreciated within the government. One study of whistleblowers found
that 232 out of 233 them reported suffering retaliation; another study found reprisals in about 95% of cases.
- Contrary to the popular impression, the politics of those listed ranges from the left to the right, and from the
ideological to the independent. PUBLIC OFFICIALS MIGUEL RODRIGUEZ was a prosecutor on the
staff of Kenneth Starr. His attempts to uncover the truth in the Vincent Foster death case were repeatedly foiled and he
was the subject of planted stories undermining his credibility and implying that he was unstable. Rodriguez eventually
resigned. JEAN DUFFEY: Head of a joint federal-county drug task force in Arkansas. Her first instructions
from her boss: "Jean, you are not to use the drug task force to investigate any public official." Duffey's
work, however, led deep into the heart of the Dixie Mafia, including members of the Clinton machine and the
investigation of the so-called "train deaths." Ambrose Evans-Pritchard reports that when she produced a star
witness who could testify to Clinton's involvement with cocaine, the local prosecuting attorney, Dan Harmon issued a
subpoena for all the task force records, including "the incriminating files on his own activities. If Duffey had
complied it would have exposed 30 witnesses and her confidential informants to violent retributions. She refused."
Harmon issued a warrant for her arrest and friendly cops told her that there was a $50,000 price on her head. She
eventually fled to Texas. The once-untouchable Harmon was later convicted of racketeering, extortion and drug dealing.
BILL DUNCAN: An IRS investigator in Arkansas who drafted some 30 federal indictments of Arkansas figures on money
laundering and other charges. Clinton biographer Roger Morris quotes a source who reviewed the evidence: "Those
indictments were a real slam dunk if there ever was one." The cases were suppressed, many in the name of
"national security." Duncan was never called to testify. Other IRS agents and state police disavowed Duncan
and turned on him. Said one source, "Somebody outside ordered it shut down and the walls went up."
RUSSELL WELCH: An Arkansas state police detective working with Duncan. Welch developed a 35-volume, 3,000 page archive
on drug and money laundering operations at Mena. His investigation was so compromised that a high state police official
even let one of the targets of the probe look through the file. At one point, Welch was sprayed in the face with poison,
later identified by the Center for Disease Control as anthrax. He would write in his diary, "I feel like I live in
Russia, waiting for the secret police to pounce down. A government has gotten out of control. Men find themselves in
positions of power and suddenly crimes become legal." Welch is no longer with the state police. DAN
SMALTZ: Smaltz did an outstanding job investigating and prosecuting charges involving illegal payoffs to Agriculture
Secretary Mike Espy, yet was treated with disparaging and highly inaccurate reporting by the likes of the David Broder
and the NY Times. Espy was acquitted under a law that made it necessary to not only prove that he accepted gratuities
but that he did something specific in return. On the other hand, Tyson Foods copped a plea in the same case, paying $6
million in fines and serving four years' probation. The charge: that Tyson had illegally offered Espy $12,000 in
airplane rides, football tickets and other payoffs. In the Espy investigation, Smaltz obtained 15 convictions and
collected over $11 million in fines and civil penalties. Offenses for which convictions were obtained included false
statements, concealing money from prohibited sources, illegal gratuities, illegal contributions, falsifying records,
interstate transportation of stolen property, money laundering, and illegal receipt of USDA subsidies. Incidentally,
Janet Reno blocked Smaltz from pursuing leads aimed at allegations of major drug trafficking in Arkansas and payoffs to
the then governor of the state, WJ Clinton. Espy had become Ag secretary only after being flown to Arkansas to get the
approval of chicken king Don Tyson. DAVID SCHIPPERS was House impeachment counsel and a Chicago Democrat.
He did a highly creditable job but since he didn't fit the right-wing conspiracy theory, the Clintonista media
downplayed his work. Thus most Americans don't know that he told NewsMax, "Let me tell you, if we had a chance to
put on a case, I would have put live witnesses before the committee. But the House leadership, and I'm not talking about
Henry Hyde, they just killed us as far as time was concerned. I begged them to let me take it into this year. Then I
screamed for witnesses before the Senate. But there was nothing anybody could do to get those Senators to show any
courage. They told us essentially, you're not going to get 67 votes so why are you wasting our time." Schippers
also said that while a number of representatives looked at additional evidence kept under seal in a nearby House
building, not a single senator did. JOHN CLARKE: When Patrick Knowlton stopped to relieve himself in Ft.
Marcy Park 70 minutes before the discovery of Vince Foster's body, he saw things that got him into deep trouble. His
interview statements were falsified and prior to testifying he claims he was overtly harassed by more than a score of
men in a classic witness intimidation technique. In some cases there were witnesses. John Clarke has been his dogged
lawyer in the witness intimidation case that has been largely ignored by the media, even when the three-judge panel
overseeing the Starr investigation permitted Knowlton to append a 20 page addendum to the Starr Report.
OTHER THE ARKANSAS COMMITTEE: What would later be known as the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy actually began on
the left - as a group of progressive students at the University of Arkansas had formed the Arkansas Committee to look
into Mena, drugs, money laundering, and Arkansas politics. This committee was the source of some of the important early
Clinton stories including those published in the Progressive Review. CLINTON ADMINISTRATION SCANDALS
E-LIST: Moderated by Ray Heizer, this list has been subject to all the idiosyncrasies of Internet bulletin boards, but
it has nonetheless proved invaluable to researchers and journalists. JOURNALISTS JERRY SEPER
of the Washington Times was far and away the best beat reporter of the story, handling it week after week in the best
tradition of investigative journalism. If other reporters had followed Seper's lead, the history of the Clintons'
machine might have been quite different. AMBROSE EVANS-PRITCHARD of the London Telegraph did a remarkable
job of digging into some of the seamiest tales from Arkansas and the Clinton past. Other early arrivals on the scene
were Alexander Cockburn and Jeff Gerth. CHRISTOPHER RUDDY, among other fine reports on the Clinton
scandals, did the best job laying out the facts in the Vince Foster death case. ROGER MORRIS AND SALLY
DENTON wrote a major expose of events at Mena, but at the last moment the Washington Post's brass ordered the story
killed. It was published by Penthouse and later included in Morris' "Partners in Power," the best biography of
the Clintons. OTHERS who helped get parts of the story out included reporters Philip Weiss, Carl Limbacher,
Wes Phelan, David Bresnahan, William Sammon, Liza Myers, Mara Leveritt, Matt Drudge, Jim Ridgeway, Nat Hentoff, Michael
Isikoff, Christopher Hitchens, and Michael Kelly. Also independent investigator Hugh Sprunt and former White House FBI
agent Gary Aldrich. SAM SMITH of the Progressive Review wrote the first book (Shadows of Hope, University
of Indiana Press, 1994) deconstructing the Clinton myth and the Review developed a major database on the topic.
The Clintons, to adapt a line from Dr. Johnson, were not only corrupt, they were the cause of corruption in others.
Seldom in America have so many come to excuse so much mendacity and malfeasance as during the Clinton years.
THE CLINTON LEGACY The Hidden Election USA Today calls it "the hidden election," in
which nearly 7,000 state legislative seats are decided with only minimal media and public attention. The paper took
brief notice because this is the year the state legislatures perform their most important national function: drawing
revised congressional districts based on the most recent census. But there's another important national
story here: further evidence of the disaster that Bill Clinton has been for the Democratic Party. According to the
National Conference of State Legislatures, Democrats held a 1,542 seat lead in the state bodies in 1990. As of last
November that lead had shrunk to 288. That's a loss of over 1,200 state legislative seats, nearly all of them under
Clinton. Across the US, the Democrats control only 65 more state senate seats than the Republicans.
Further, in 1992, the Democrats controlled 17 more state legislatures than the Republicans. After November, the
Republicans control one more than the Democrats. Not only is this a loss of 9 legislatures under Clinton, but it is the
first time since 1954 that the GOP has controlled more state legislatures than the Democrats (they tied in 1968).
Here's what happened to the Democrats under Clinton, based on our latest figures: - GOP seats gained in
House since Clinton became president: 48 - GOP seats gained in Senate since Clinton became president: 8
- GOP governorships gained since Clinton became president: 11 - GOP state legislative seats gained since
Clinton became president: 1,254 as of 1998 - State legislatures taken over by GOP since Clinton
became president: 9 - Democrat officeholders who have become Republicans since Clinton became
president: 439 as of 1998 - Republican officeholders who have become Democrats since Clinton became
president: 3 NATIONAL CONF OF STATE LEGISLATURES

Bootstrap-Lifting Bootstrap-lifting? says the reader. It is a vision I have seen: upon a vast plain, men and women are
gathered in dense throngs, crouched in uncomfortable and distressing positions, their fingers hooked in the straps of
their boots. They are engaged in lifting themselves; tugging and straining until they grow red in the face, exhausted.
The perspiration streams from their foreheads, they show every symptom of distress; the eyes of all are fixed, not upon
each other, nor upon their bootstraps, but upon the sky above. There is a look of rapture upon their faces, and now and
then, amid grunts and groans, they cry out with excitement and triumph. I approach one and say to him, "Friend,
what is this you are doing?" He answers, without pausing to glance at me, "I am performing spiritual
exercises. See how I rise?" "But," I say, "you are not rising at all!" Whereat he becomes
instantly angry. "You are one of the scoffers!" "But friend," I protest, "don't you feel the
earth under your feet?" "You are a materialist!" "But, friend, I can see --" "You are
without spiritual vision!" And so I move on among the sweating and groaning hordes. Being of a sympathetic turn of
mind, I cannot help being distressed by the prevalence of this singular practice among so large a portion of the human
race. How is it possible that none of them should suspect the futility of their procedure? Or can it really be that I am
uncomprehending? That in some way they are actually getting off the ground, or about to get off the ground? Then I
observe a new phenomenon: a man gliding here and there among the bootstrap-lifters, approaching from the rear and
slipping his hands into their pockets. The position of the spiritual exercisers greatly facilitates his work; their eyes
being cast up to heaven, they do not see him, their thoughts being occupied, they do not heed him; he goes through their
pockets at leisure, and transfers the contents to a bag he carries, and then moves on to the next victim. I watch him
for a while, and finally approach and ask, "What are you doing, sir?" He answers, "I am picking
pockets." "Oh," I say, puzzled by his matter-of-course tone. "But -- I beg pardon -- are you a
thief?" "Oh, no," he answers, smilingly, "I am the agent of the Wholesale Pickpockets' Association.
This is Prosperity." "I see," I reply. "And these people let you --" "It is the
law," he says. "It is also the gospel." I turn, following his glance, and observe another person
approaching -- a stately figure, clad in scarlet and purple robes, moving with slow dignity. He gazes about at the
sweating and grunting hordes; now and then he stops and lifts his hand in a gesture of benediction, and proclaims in
rolling tones, "Blessed are the Bootstrap-lifters, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven." He moves on, and
after a bit stops and announces again, "Man doth not live by bread alone, but by every word that cometh out of the
mouth of the prophets and priests of Bootstrap- lifting. Watching a while longer, I see this majestic one approach the
agent of the Wholesale Pickpocket's, Association. The agent greets him as a friend, and proceeds to transfer to the
pockets of his capacious robes a generous share of the loot which he has collected. The majestic one does not cringe,
nor does he make any effort to hide what is going on. On the contrary he cries aloud, "It is more blessed to give
than to receive!" And again he cries, "The laborer is worthy of his hire!" And a third time he cries, yet
more sternly, "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's!" And the Bootstrap-lifters pause long enough
to answer: "Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law!" Then they renew their straining
and tugging. I step up, and in timid tones begin, "Reverend sir, will you tell me by what right you take this
wealth?" Instantly a frown comes upon his face, and he cries in a voice of thunder, "Blasphemer!" And
all the Bootstrap-lifters desist from their lifting, and menace me with furious looks. There is a general call for a
policeman of the Wholesale Pickpockets' Association; and so I fall silent, and slink away in the throng, and thereafter
keep my thoughts to myself. Over the vast plain I wander, observing a thousand strange and incredible and terrifying
manifestations of the Bootstrap- lifting impulse. There is, I discover, a regular propaganda on foot; a long time ago --
no man can recall how far back -- the Wholesale Pickpockets made the discovery of the ease with which a man's pockets
could be rifled while he was preoccupied with spiritual exercises, and they began offering prizes for the best essays in
support of the practice. Now their propaganda is everywhere triumphant, -- and year by year we see an increase in the
rewards and emoluments of the prophets and priests of the cult. The ground is covered with stately temples of various
designs, all of which I am told are consecrated to Bootstrap- lifting, I come to where a group of people are occupied in
laying the corner-stone of a new white marble structure; I inquire and am informed it is the First Church of Bootstrap-
lifters, Scientist. As I stand watching, a card is handed to me, informing me that a lady will do my Bootstrap-lifting
at five dollars per lift. I go on to another building, which I am told is a library containing volumes in defense of
the Bootstrap-lifters, published under the auspices of the Wholesale Pickpockets. I enter, and find endless vistas of
shelves, also several thousand current magazines and papers. I consult these -- for my legs have given out in the effort
to visit and inspect all phases of the Bootstrap-lifting practice. I discover that hardly a week passes that some one
does not start a new cult, or revive an old one; if I had a hundred life-times I could not know all the creeds and
ceremonies, the services and rituals, the litanies and liturgies, the hymns, anthems and offertories of Bootstrap-
lifting. There are the Holy Roman Bootstrap-lifters, whose priests are fed by Transubstantiation; the established
Anglican Bootstrap-lifters, whose priests live by "livings"; the Baptist Bootstrap-lifters, whose preachers
practice total immersion in Standard Oil. There are Yogi Bootstrap-lifters with flowing robes of yellow silk;
Theosophist Bootstrap-lifters with green and purple auras; Mormon Bootstrap-lifters, Mazdaznan Bootstrap-lifters,
Spiritualist and Spirit-Fruit, Millerite and Dowieite, Holy Roller and Holy Jumper, Comd-to-glory Negro, Billy Sunday
base-ball and Salvation Army bassdrum Bootstrap-lifters. There are the thousand varieties of "New Thought"
Bootstrap-lifters; the mystic and transcendentalist, Swedenborgian and Jacob Boehme Bootstrap- lifters; the Elbert
Hubbard high-art Bootstrap-lifters with half a million magazinelets at two bits apiece; the "uplift" and
"optimist," the Ralph Waldo Trine and Orison Swett Marden Bootstrap-litters with a hundred thousand volumes at
one dollar per volume. There are the Platonist and Hegelian and Kantian professors of collegiate metaphysical Bootstrap-
lifting at several thousand dollars per year each. There are the Nietz- schean Bootstrap-lifters, who lift themselves to
the Superman, and the art-for-art's-sake, neo-Pagan Bootstrap-lifters, who lift themselves down to the Ape. Excepting
possibly the last-mentioned group, the priests of all these cults, the singers, shouters, prayers and exhorters of
Bootstrap-lifting have as their distinguishing characteristic that they do very little lifting at their own bootstraps,
and less at any other man's. Now and then you may see one bend and give a delicate tug, of a purely symbolical
character: as when the Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Bootstrap-lifters comes once a year to wash the feet of the poor; or
when the Sunday-school Superintendent of the Baptist Bootstrap-lifters shakes the hand of one of his Colorado mine-
slaves. But for the most part the priests and preachers of Bootstrap-lifting walk haughtily erect, many of them being so
swollen with prosperity that they could not reach their bootstraps if they wanted to. Their role in life is to exhort
other men to more vigorous efforts at self-elevation, that the agents of the Wholesale Pickpockets' Association may ply
their immemorial role with less chance of interference. From the Profits of Religion by Upton Sinclair. Cheers! CVC

wealth?" Instantly a frown comes upon his face, and he cries in a voice of thunder, "Blasphemer!" And
all the Bootstrap-lifters desist from their lifting, and menace me with furious looks.
Anglican Bootstrap-lifters, whose priests live by "livings"; the Baptist Bootstrap-lifters, whose preachers
practice total immersion in Standard Oil. There are Yogi Bootstrap-lifters with flowing robes of yellow silk;
Cheers! CVC
