beginner too. So far I have 2 quilts tops done and will be posting to the group as soon as I can get pictures taken We
are in the process of selling my house and downsizing so the pics will have to wait. Getting into a smaller, one floor
place (right now it is four floors, 2,200 sq. ft.) is more important right now. I tripped over a cat again and am pretty
sore. Its a good thing that my cats know when to hide. I am going to have such a bruise on my hip. My ability to
navigate on stairs keeps getting worse. Anyway, my fist quilt top was Turning Twenty. An amazingly easy quilt top, which
I managed to screw up but it still works. It was said that you can't screw this one up and that is right because even
though I have some wrong placements the quilt still works. Best advice is to get in there and get going and have fun.
BTW, we can be a nosy and noisy bunch, but you will find the most wonderful and caring people in this group. Wlecome to
the group. Michele

Thanks Pat. I got that far too, but could not find Twisted Threads in the internet - and ringing is not really a
viable option from down here. At least not for a single pattern. I will sit up until the middle of the night and pay
overseas rates to chat to my friends, but not to try to order a single wall hanging pattern lol. The one and only
time I considered doing an order this way I got a very confused woman on the phone who finally admitted she had only
been working in the shop for three weeks and she really didn't know what she was doing. But she only admitted this
after about 20 minutes. I gave up on that order and said I hoped she had a nice day, and hung up. I now make it a
rule NOT to ring overdeas to order. If they can't take an order by email (I don't have my fax hooked up anymore) I
usually just look elsewhere or manage without. It's not like I can't live without another pattern lol I just
thought someone might have seen the pattern, that's all. -- Cheryl & the Cats in OZ o o o o

Dear Rhoda, you could have broken bones in your throat, chest and face. Tell DH that he can feel free to
"tough" whatever he wants. Call a friend (or taxi) to take you to the ER immediately. Anytime it's a chore to
breathe, it's Somebody Important trying to tell you to get yourself to medical help RIGHT NOW. I'm not trying to be

Louise is right, Rhoda -- get yourself to your doctor! You say that your car was totaled. You say that the air bag
"did in my face, neck and chest. Even breathing is a chore..." You can imagine what the steering wheel and
front window would have done to you if the air bag hadn't been there. You probably would not even be around to tell us
that breathing is difficult. In 1972, I was driving my new Ford Galaxy in town, through a quiet little residential
area. Next thing I knew, I was on the floor of my car and couldn't find my glasses. I had been hit, broadside by a
teenaged boy who already had his driver's license suspended. My new car was also totaled - the impact bent the car
frame, and those were the days of big, heavy, all steal cars. The police said he barreled around a corner and hit me
at the intersection. I wouldn't have had a chance to see him coming. He got the ticket, of course. They asked me if
I was hurt. I did a quick check -- no bones sticking out, no blood squirting anywhere, and I could see OK once I found
my glasses. They drove us to the police station. I was just 3 blocks away from my Gramma's house, who had been
watching my 1 1/2 yr old little boy, so I just walked over there. Those were way before the days of 5-point child
restraint seats. I've thanked God ever since that he wasn't in the car with me at the time. I had a headache, but
figured, "No wonder!" and called my husband, who came and picked us up and took us home. It wasn't until a
few weeks later that I realized the headache never went away, and I had more aches and pains as time went on. Before
the days of MRI's and CAT scans, all we had to rely on were X-rays and the understanding and experience of the doctors.
I had increasing problems with chronic pain, but life goes on. I got through nursing school, had another baby, and
worked for 34 years as an RN. But as the years went by, tick-tock, my pain became a monster and I had to quit work.
It took Social Security 3 years to accept my application for disability, and since I was in my 50's anyway, they just
gave me Medicare, and have counted me as retired and disabled. I won't even go into the misery my daily life can be --
horrible pain, inability to ambulate, unable to leave my home. A few years ago, I had a series of tests, including an
MRI, EMG's, EEG's, etc. It turns out that I had 3 ruptured discs in my back and neck. Spinal stenosis.
Osteoarthritis. Degenerative disk disease. Sciatica problems. I've had several surgeries over the years. Two were
experimental, but I was at a point where I was ready to try anything. Unfortunately, they didn't help me. There's no
way of knowing exactly *when* the back injuries occurred, only that they were old injuries, and got worse as I got
older. Of course, when I found out exactly what the physical injuries were, I could trace it all back to that
accident. The accident in which I said I was "OK," and the police didn't even suggest going to the ER to
check me out. At the very least, back then, they knew about whiplash injuries, and I should have been treated for
that. My life could have been so different if I had received medical treatment that day. I've done the best I could
with the hand I was dealt, but I admit that I do feel cheated at times. Please, please -- go to the hospital's
emergency department. You won't be sorry to find out that you're really OK. But you will be very, very sorry if you
find out later that you are NOT OK. I'll keep you in my prayers. René "Louise"

AliceW wrote: [quote:504f6b02d3]Thanks to all of you who responded to my request for strength. We held Miss Paisley as
she slipped into a sweet sleep at 7pm tonight. She gave kisses and buried her head into my DHs arm. We felt her last
heart beat and let her go to be with our Brandy who has been waiting for her since September of 2002. The vet was
wonderful and compassionate and wrapped Paisley in a beautiful Scottish plaid blanket. Little touches that meant alot.
Your words of comfort and strength meant more to me than you will ever know. As it turns out, as upset as I was and
still am, my sweet DH lost it and I needed to be there for him. He has taken this far harder than I thought he would
given the length of time we knew this day would come. Miss Paisley was "my" dog as anyone who has had or has
a Westie knows, they pick one person as their own. Oh, they tolerate the others, but one person gets their heart, soul
and every loyal cell in their little bodies. Paisley chose me. I took her for all of her grooming visits, vet visits
and walks. I fed her, bathed her and bought her baby carrots - her favorite treat. I took her for all of the testing
she needed in the past year to determine the cause of her seizures. I held her while they poked and prodded and took
blood from her little veins and urine from her bladder. She was 9 pounds at her last "normal" vet visit but
tonight she was 15 pounds - 9 pounds of Paisley and 6 pounds of fluid that bloated her little belly. But she chose my
sweet, dear husband to hold her tonight. He cried as he watched her little eyes close. I cried for them both. Her
pain is gone, but his is just starting. When we arrived home, Kirby was waiting at the door. He was waiting for him,
because as a Westie, Kirby chose "him" and knew at this point in time that he needed to make sure he knew
that. Kirby is HIS dog, always will be. I love this little guy, but he did not choose me. And I am so glad right now
at the choice he made. I will spend tomorrow at home with Kirby since he will surely know something is different,
somehow, tomorrow won't quite be the same as the other days have been. I want to help him through that somehow. I may
quilt a bit tomorrow as well, and he may sleep at my feet like Paisley used to do. I think it will be good for both of
us. [/quote:504f6b02d3] Kirby will be a great comfort to you both. And yes, he'll know all right. When out Marmalade
cat went, Muffin spent weeks looking for him all round the house whenever Marmalade was mentioned. He'd dig into all
Marmalade's best hiding places, like under the duvet, in the ironing basket, behind the sofa cushions... They do know,
just as we know. -- Kate XXXXXX R.C.T.Q Madame Chef des Trolls Lady Catherine, Wardrobe Mistress of the Chocolate

waving from the den of chaos, and the waving is slow and painful. Not sure what I did to myself, but *everything* is
hurting today - knees were barely working this morning and right shoulder feels like a large weight was on it
throughout the night. BUT...the flags got made and delivered and all payments are up to date. I have a pair of pants
to hem, laundry to put away, more laundry to wash, cat litter to empty and refill, dinner to figure out, and a house
to clean. Oh, and I have to get back to work on DHs safari jacket, make more flags for them to sell at the fundraiser
in a few weeks (18 days from today), figure out if I can actually manage to get at least 1 vest made for him, and
possibly do another commissioned quilt!! So, just wanted to check in - I have been reading while I dealt with applique
bits for the flags, and I printed out the info for the BOM...I am stopped at August, but have sept/oct/nov all lined up
on the sewing table for when I have some down time. Larisa, heading off for Advil and lunch

Carole, These are great! You have inspired me to make a quilt using my collection of cat prints. I never thought to
mix them as you have. Great work! I must go put it on my list right now, but first I have to find the list. I also
must follow your lead to try & keep on top of all of my projects. Love & Blessings, Royce, aka Hon-a A day

Thanks for your compliments, everybody. I think the colors "work" because of the skill of the fabric
designers! Those cat fabrics are just wild. I decided that on this quilt, ANY color goes, as long as I tie all the
blocks together with that tan paw print. This time, each block has two colored cat prints, but they use almost exactly
the same colors in them and you have to look closely to distinguish one of the prints from the other! My intention is
for this quilt to be cheerful, colorful, and highly amusing!! (And yes, between this group and Carol Doak's group I'm
getting a LOT of paper-piecing practice, and I'm getting much better at it. Watching her new DVD made a world of
difference and I'm very glad I got it! I'm not afraid of paper-piecing anymore.) Carole in Northwest GA - Retired

threads including a teal metallic at the last. If I were to do it again, I'd draw it a touch over the size needed, as
you can see a band of the green I used behind and around the edges. I may play with the thread painting a bit more and

Hi Everyone, As promised here is a short report. I left work on Thursday night to drive down to my friend Donna's in
Bellevue. Got there by 8:30 p.m. The next morning we headed over to Adele's and helped pack the delivery truck with
baskets for the silent auction. Some wonderful goodies. Then off for breakfast, a quick trip to Pacific Fabrics, and
the Loft quilt shop. Next we went home for a nap, neither one of us slept very well the previous night. Then an
early dinner, some reading and bed by 10 p.m. Saturday we were at the Seattle Centre by 0930 to pick up our volunteer
tags. Then we went to the Northwest rooms to help with setting up the tables for the silent auction and whatever else
we could do. Back downstairs to the show. What a great show! The best of show is a huge cat quilt that has quilt
blocks and a cat on it. There was something for everyone. The touring show Spice of Life was on display. The vendors
market was great. I had a decided to buy one of the Tutto suitcases for my sewing machine so I only got a sashiko
pillow square to work on along with thread and needles. I ended up getting the large suitcase because I don't think
I'd ever take my sewing machine on a plane, so the larger one is more practical for workshops and retreats. She also
had a show special for the Serger tote so I got one to match. The suitcase collapses down to about 3". Here is a
review and link to their website if you are interested. http://www.planetpatchwork.com/tuttoreview.htm I ended up with
the hot pink colour. It will go nicely with my turquoise and black luggage! Now to find some bright yellow accents
and I'll have my colour wheel with me always! The gala dinner was great, although I was busy trying to keep track of
bidding numbers and their bids. I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and will offer to help again. Back to Donna's by 10
p.m. and home Sunday afternoon. Tired but happy to have the experience. Check out http://www.apnq.org/ for info about

Howdy! Thanks, Jo. Very sweet of you to take so much time over this. Lucky Sasha. I've had a couple of hateful cats
and a couple of crazy Siamese (aren't they all?), all had to have pills at some time; I just wrapped them in a towel,
loved all over them and slipped the pill down their gullets. By the time you get your motar&pestle out, Dusty will
have been dosed & kissed, eaten her treat & climbed back under the quilt. <VBG> Whatever works!

forearm. Drop pill into mouth. 5. Pry claws from back legs out of your arm. Go get the cat, pick up half-dissolved pill
from floor and drop it into garbage can. 6. Get new pill from bottle. Go into bathroom and get a fluffy towel. Stay in
the bathroom with the cat, and close the door. 7. Sit on bathroom floor, wrap towel around kitty, leaving only his head
exposed. Cradle kitty in the crook of your arm, and pick up pill off of counter. 8. Retrieve cat from top of shower
door (you didn't know that cats can jump 5 feet straight up in the air, did you?), and wrap towel around it a little
tighter, making sure its paws can't come out this time. With fingers at either side of its jaw, pry it open and pop pill
into mouth. Quickly close mouth (his, not yours). 9. Sit on floor with cat in your lap, stroking it under the chin and
talking gently to it for at least a half hour, while the pill dissolves. 10. Unwrap towel, open bathroom door. Wash off
scratches in warm soapy water, comb your hair, and go find something to occupy your time for 7-1/2 hours, and then
repeat. I actually just put up photos of how I give pills to Sasha. I have a new album at webshots:

more than 1/4" seam allowance. I don't remember what I used, but I do know that I've had to mend some seams that
pulled out. That quilt was on his bed from the time I made it until he got married, and they used it on an extra bed for
a while after that. I'm sure they still have it. It was a nice, soft warm quilt. When we had a cat, the cat was
supposed to stay downstairs, away from the bedrooms. If he managed to sneak upstairs, he always headed for that corduroy
quilt. If I recall correctly, I cut pieces 8 inches wide and various lengths; I sewed them into strips the length of
the quilt. When my scraps weren't big enough for 8 inch strips, I cut 4 inch wide pieces of varying lengths and sewed
them into strips. Then I sewed the strips together, alternating wide ones with narrow ones. I used a sheet for backing
and poly batting and tied with yarn. Instead of binding, I turned the backing to the front and stitched down. I think I
have a photo of that quilt someplace; I should try and find it. Julia in MN [/quote:80b5dd10aa] Well I've been thinking
about doing a strip or bar type quilt and now I have the cord on my mind. It seems to me the most sensible thing to do

Oh my, yes, indeed, Julia. Corduroy is heavy and it does want to pull apart at the seams. In addition, it is most
hard-headed. You can lay two pieces together and they will grab onto each other and refuse to budge. Assuming you're
prepared for that, corduroy does indeed made a soft and durable quilt. I'd recommend something easy-going such as
simply squares about 6". You'll get some variations in color by turning them in all directions. Attempting
something complicated probably wouldn't be much fun. Polly "Julia in MN" <jaccola-AT-chartermi-DOT-

Posted by Susan Laity Price on Mon Oct 30, 2006 5:50 PM    Post subject: Re: Fabric for Baby Quilt

For a quick baby gift I sometimes take a preprinted panel or bright print fabric and add flannel backing using the
"pillow case" method. Pre-wash everything. Lay the two pieces of fabric right sides together pinning around
the edges. Following the top fabric outline, sew around the entire piece leaving an opening large enough to put your
hand through. Trim the seam allowances on all four corners diagonally to reduce the bulk. Turn the sewn pieces to the
right side. Make sure the corners are as nice as possible. Finger press the sewn edge so the back fabric doesn't show on
the front. Pin around the edges to hold the fabrics in place and top stitch 1/4" from the edge. Now by hand add
ties about every four inches all over the top or follow the pattern of the fabric to decide where to make ties. I use
pearl cotton and square knots for the ties. The result is a warm, snuggly blanket that has lots of love. One tradition
that I enjoy is saying a prayer for the mother and baby with each knot. I add a label to the back which gives the baby's
name and date of birth (if given after the birth) but always says something about the quilt being made with love and
prayers for this special little child. If the quilt is going to someone I know I will add my name. If it is going to
charity I only add innitials. I have used this technique to help friends who don't quilt or physically can no longer
quilt make presents or donations. I do the machine work and then take it to them to add the ties. If the person is
handicapped I usually add the pearl cotton but leave the tying to the handicapped person. They have a real feeling of
accomplishment and pride in having made the gift. Susan On Mon, 30 Oct 2006 02:41:24 -0500, Jacqueline from KY

quilt for my sister have the fabric for this one 4. A quilt out of the Moda 3 sister's chocolat fabric for my guest

theme or something for this one. 8. A quilt done in musical notes, etc. for our choir director at church, which happens
to be my best friend's husband. got the fabric for this 9. One done in cats or musical stuff for our piano/organist,
which happens to be my best friend. Might have enough fabric for this one 10. This baby quilt gotta buy the fabric

I'm not sure that I would plan on handpiecing a flannel quilt; but if you do, be sure to use deeper seams, more like
1/2 inch. because the seams really do pull and ravel. A flannel backing might be more practical if you are going to
hand piece a top. And I agree that your plan-to-do-list is too long for 1 year -- make it your 5 year plan! Elizabeth
