Posted by Patti on Tue Aug 29, 2006 7:57 AM    Post subject: Re: Memory quilt out of fil shirts....

This does sound rather 'different'. So, before doing anything with these 4 shirts, I suggest getting an old shirt -
from a charity shop or similar perhaps? - and trying out what you plan to do. I do think that, with a bit of judicious
folding or cutting and re-positioning of the various parts of the shirts, you would be able to get the fronts to make
rectangles. I think you would be happier with strips of another fabric sewn to the shirts - if you achieve the
rectangles - rather than appliquéing them to a background. But, that's just how I feel - not a rule or anything
>g< Hope it goes well. Thanks for coming back to let us know what you decided to do. .. In message

have 4 shirts to work with. I think I will need a foundation piece to quilt the shirts too. Does that make sense? If
so, how would one sew the shirts to the foundation piece so it looks like the shirts are quilted together? Or should I
cut pieces from another fabric to patch between the gaps in the shirts? I don't want to ruin these shirts, and before I

The parts of AZ that regularly get snow not only know how to deal with it, they make money from it. Snowbowl is a

lack of it is a big part of the drought we are in. Pati, in Phx Batik Freak wrote: [quote:a8d7fe2fa9]Holy crap.

Well, honestly, I only made one Carpenter's Wheel but it is truly perfect. A bit serious for a crib quilt, I thought,
so naturally I bordered it with first some crabs and then some polka dots. Baby won't care if the points are perfect
or not but how sweet it is to have finally discovered how to take the wiggle slip/slide out of point matching. Polly

smallest bite with the pins. watch that happen often on SQ. i always figure the bigger the bite, the more likely to lay
flat, oops, shame on me. i dont pin a lot tho, not with regular piecing. i usually hope if i can nest the seams right
i'll get decent points. maybe i need to pin more and i'll get better than decent, i'll get poifect one. hmmmmmm. which
reminds me, i saw Judy Dales on SQ today, love her curved quilts. i dont need a 'ho ho red' but i'll have a look anyhow,

give me a break all day long. It's been a long time since I've had toddlers around for any length of time, and it wears
me out! <G> But that's not what has me frustrated -- it's just probably the cause of my carelessness... I'd
finally made the backing for my feathered star WIP (and I can't remember who sent me the Excel worksheet for figuring
out how to do diagonal backings, but thanks so much! It worked!) and then pieced together the last lengths of black
80/20 batting. So far so good. This afternoon while the boys were being unusually good, I figured I could lay out the
quilt sandwich on the table; after all, with DH away, it could stay there indefinitely instead of having to disappear at
mealtimes. :) Okay. But here's where my pooped condition came into play. I *thought* I'd double-checked the overhang, I
really did! But after putting in about 500 pins (I like to pin *securely*, and the boys had left), I came to the very
last section that had been hanging off the table, and it was about 2" short of backing. ACK! I now have a lovely
callus on my finger from inserting and then removing all of those pins. :S It's so lovely that it even bled a little.
Sheesh. But the quilt sandwich is again spread on the table and ready for pinning -- tomorrow, when my finger recovers.
;) And this time, I *swear* I've double-checked. I hope. Did I mention that the backing looks pretty cool? It's almost
all the same navy as the background on the front, but it has a wide strip of the leftover stripe from the star points --

I used a method of arranging that I'd seen on Simply Quilts. The only rule was that no biscuit was stitched to one
just like it. Other than that, whatever I drew from the biscuit heap was the next one to be stitched in. Since I'm
such an organized sort of person, it was a strange procedure to me but it works just great. Ah yes. Scrappy is good.

quilt). If my math is accurate, then the calculator is accurate. So if I were purchase exactly what it says I need for
all my shapes, I should have exactly enough for my quilt (I plan to purchase extra just incase, and I would love to have
left overs any way). You select the shape of the piece you need (choices are square, rectangle, HST, HRectangeT, QST,
trapezoid and parallelogram), enter it's size (finished or cut), how many you need, and WOF. It then gives you a page
that states the shape, how many pieces you entered, both cut and finished dimensions, and cutting directions along with
the required yardage (appears to be rounded up to the nearest 8th yd). The cutting instructions tell you how many
strips of what size to cut, including your WOF entered. It then tells you how many pieces from each strip and if there
are any spare it will tell you how many extra you end up with. I was really impressed (can't you tell)!! NAYY, just

Help!! Charlotte, I raced off to try this and got GREAT results for most of the shapes, but got totally confused on
basic QSTs. I get the measurements OK but it tells me to cut in a way that will have the bias on the outside of the
square finished block, and when I asked for 24 triangles it gave me instructions for halving 24 squares and getting 24
extra pieces. I must be doing something wrong, and it's probably so obvious that you will laugh - but I can't figure
it out. Maybe it's just too early in the morning LOL I asked for 24 QSTs from 45" fabric for a finished square
block of 12" and got 1.625y. The material req is about twice what I think I need and the cutting directions are
off. What am I doing wrong? -- Cheryl & the Cats _ _ _ _ _ _ ( > Y < ) (

The way they do it is more complicated than it needs to be... if you are willing to have smaller pieces in your block.
If you are using a small scale tone-on-tone type fabric -- you'll hardly notice the difference. The alternative way to
make it is to make it doing a grid -- 4 x 4 inside blocks. Then do 4 half-square triangles to make the center cross
section. Email me privately and I'll send you a picture of how the less complex box would be put together. Kate in MI

I like the red one too! I wonder how many YBR patterns have been sold? I have used it many times for charity quilts
which others have helped me make so have probably chosen the fabrics for at least 25 YBRs. No matter what fabrics are
used they all turn out great. Usually I try to coordinate the fat quarters but once we just used all the leftovers and
it still was nice. It works well with flannel also. Several times we have used squares from a printed panel for the
larger square. This makes cutting a little more wasteful but the finished quilt is themed around those panels and of
course the unused squares from the fat quarters are never really wasted. Susan Price On Wed, 21 Jun 2006 20:08:10

oh-so-versatile pattern. I had a lot of fun with the YBR this winter! Here are the pictures of the two I finished this
spring for two of the three couches in my house. Batik Brick Road, and Winter Brick Road, the first two photos in the
'my work' album. http://community.webshots.com/user/hicall Karen, Queen of Squishies [/quote:ef2c014592]

Thanks, Susan, and what a great idea about the fussy cutting! Karen, Queen of Squishies [quote:32b071718f]I like the
red one too! I wonder how many YBR patterns have been sold? I have used it many times for charity quilts which others
have helped me make so have probably chosen the fabrics for at least 25 YBRs. No matter what fabrics are used they all
turn out great. Usually I try to coordinate the fat quarters but once we just used all the leftovers and it still was
nice. It works well with flannel also. Several times we have used squares from a printed panel for the larger square.
This makes cutting a little more wasteful but the finished quilt is themed around those panels and of course the unused
squares from the fat quarters are never really wasted. Susan Price[/quote:32b071718f]

That sounds like what I was looking for, but I would need yards of it. Can you tell me the manufacturer's name? I
think I also saw a coordinating fabric with little frogs on it as well. Thanks for the offer and the information!

Thanks...it was a huge stretch for me to work in those colours and I'm very very pleased with it. It's going to be
tough to part with this one: I may have to hang it in my living room for a while before it goes to its permanent home
