better, but go ahead and cry, it truly is healing. -- TerriLee in WA (state) remove the cats to reply "joan8904

Friday I flew from Bellevue NE to Paducah KY to visit with my Mom on the occasion of her 86th birthday (10/9). I stayed
in the guest room of her senior apartment building and had my usual great time. We did some shopping for her, visiting
the Quilt Museum and ate at Backyard Barbecue twice! We went to Hancocks so Mom could pay for part of my purchase as my
belated birthday gift. We had lunch at the Red Lobster. We watch football on tv at night. We dressed the 13 sock
monkey dolls (that she'd made) in their pinafores and vests and pants. I gave her the quilt I'd made for her birthday.
I left Sunday morning to fly and my last memory of Mom is her standing outside her apartment, waving as I drove away.
On Monday morning, Mom wasn't feeling well and had a doctor's appointment at 8:30 am. She collapsed in the waiting room
with a heart attack. Heroic efforts notwithstanding, she died last night at 5 pm. My brother, who was with her, is a
cardiologist, and I'm sure that made this doubly difficult for him. Meanwhile, we are in the process of moving from old
house to new house. The movers came on Wednesday. So I unpack and cry; cry and unpack. It seems that everywhere I look,
I see a trace of my Mother. I can't believe she's gone. She'd finished the last of her Christmas gifts, always being
done ahead of time. Christmas in our new house won't be the same without Mom. I think I'll cry some more. joan

So very sorry to here about your Mom, Joan. But what a wonderful weekend it sounds like you had with her. If it was my
time to go, I can't think of any way I'd rather end my time here on earth than spending a weekend with my beloved son.
I'm so glad you had that last weekend with her all to yourself. Gloworm in Dayton joan8904 in Bellevue Nebraska wrote:

I found a couple of Irish x-stitch patterns too! One is a nice scroll with words and shamrocks - "May the Lord
keep you in his hand and never close His fist too tight". It wouldn't be hard to convert to applique if you
wanted to. -- Cheryl & the Cats o o o o o o ( > Y < ) ( > Y < )

We got two sets of the mugs too. I gave a set of them to my elderly neighbor who loves cups. I kept the other set. You
really do have to make a trip to the flea market your next trip. I love wind chimes and we found this one vendor who had
tons of different sized bamboo wind chimes. Of course I had to have one. lol. Mika "Sharon Harper"

My blocks looked a little puckered and stretched, too, but after the quilting it doesn't show so much. I used three
layers of poly mesh stabilizer on mine. I cut away as much as I could before having it quilted. Your block is beautiful

stabilsers help, as does the spray on adhesive. Do you use the grid thingy as you hoop? I find that keeps me central,
Oh and I cheat, I make the machine _think_ it is central according to where I put the block. You have to fiddle with
the layout and keep making it centre itself. But it usually works out in the end. Nel Gadget Queen

FWIW - the only time I did any machine embroidery (for a shop and it wasn't my machine) the resident teacher told me
to change needles frequently to avoid stitch problems and holes in fine fabrics. I did (like I said - not my machine
so I just followed instructions) so I have no idea what happens if you don't lol Good luck with the other blocks.

Her colours are not my style at the moment, however I can understand her use of numerous decorative embroidery stitches.
If you start adding colours, IMO you need to reduce the number of decorative stitches. Here is the finished block:

Ohio Star is easy -- if you can do 1/4 square triangles (they really aren't hard -- I use the square ... draw diagonal

are even easier then 1/4 square triangles. Thangles are handy for that as well!

don't remember me, my name is Connie : and I am from North Dakota. I have a DH of 32 years and 3 grown : children,
Jim-proud Dad of Walker, DD Annie, Mom of Riley and Gavin, and : Tyler, who joined the Marines right after 9/11. He
became "our" Marine : in 2004 when I asked you all for a shower of cards for his "golden" :
birthday (he was 23 on November 23). In April of 2005 he was deployed : to Afghanistan, and the cards and gifts and

once in the arm and once in his chest. He was sent to : the hospital in Germany for about 2 weeks and then was sent
back to : Afghanistan with three open wounds in his chest. In less than a week, : he developed a serious infection and
was sent back to Germany, then to : Bethesda, and finally home. After 6 weeks at home, he was sent back to : Hawaii
until his 4 years were up. His beautiful hug quilt that you all : made for him arrived here on Veteran's day and was
sent on to him in : Hawaii, and came home with him this spring when he was finally sent home : for good. : : : As to
how he is doing now, the best I can say is up and down. I was : outraged when he had to take out a loan in order to
get out of the : Marines, so he could pay for the equipment he 'lost' when he got shot. : And again when they gave him
a "quickie" purple heart ceremony before he : left Hawaii and gave him an empty folder. And when he was
rated at 20% : disability by the Marines. But in the end, I was just grateful that we : got him out of the Marines,
and home again. The VA system is a whole : new adventure. When he was home last fall, he was not able to drive due :
to the medications he was taking, so I had to drive him 200 miles to the : VA two or three times a week. The gas bill
and the phone bills from : when he was in Germany were staggering. We lost phone service for quite : a while until I
got it paid off, and since I am on dial-up, lost : internet access, too. Although several veteran's groups offered to
help : with the bills, none of them ever did. They have kept him running to : the VA all winter and summer, but now he
can drive himself. He gets to : have his disability rerated by the VA, but they are moving very very : slowly,
hoping, I think, that some of his problems will improve. He : hoped to go to college this fall, but they won't okay
that at this time. : If he gets a job, he risks losing all rights to a disability payment. : He has been tested,
retested, and tested yet again. Any career he has : showed any interest in has been strongly discouraged because of
his : disability, and he has been discouraged from going to school in the near : future because of his PTSD. His last
counselor suggested he become a : janitor and "skip the stress." And they wonder why he gets depressed. :
He still has terrible insomnia and night terrors and a high startle : reflex. He is off most of the medications that he

one drug for each purpose, and if you are unable to : tolerate that medication, you are out of luck. He is still

It scares me to think of how many there are, and how : they are suffering. : : I had my internet service back for a

i'd rather wander thru the show with a buddy anyhow. i dont like doing stuff alone at the best of times. with what i
'need' to do in usa i just couldnt be sure of any dates so booking in advance just wasnt an option. i'm still unsure
exactly what i'm doing when but i'll be in calif someday next week, then heading to detroit, then WV, then...... so if
i'm gonna see Houston show i'll need someone to take pity on me and have a spare bit of floor i can bed down on...a
pillow and quilt would be much appreciated as well. oh how stupid i feel beg'n and its not even for stash, which i
really dont need anymore of but i'm sure i'll bring home heaps again this trip, just cant resist all that lovely
fabric. so i guess for me its.... got spare floor space? i can fill :) going to the show? i will be your buddy :) heck
i'll buy ya lunch there and something to add to your stash as well. i'll help carry your stash acquistions as well.

Louise is right, Rhoda -- get yourself to your doctor! You say that your car was totaled. You say that the air bag
"did in my face, neck and chest. Even breathing is a chore..." You can imagine what the steering wheel and
front window would have done to you if the air bag hadn't been there. You probably would not even be around to tell us
that breathing is difficult. In 1972, I was driving my new Ford Galaxy in town, through a quiet little residential
area. Next thing I knew, I was on the floor of my car and couldn't find my glasses. I had been hit, broadside by a
teenaged boy who already had his driver's license suspended. My new car was also totaled - the impact bent the car
frame, and those were the days of big, heavy, all steal cars. The police said he barreled around a corner and hit me
at the intersection. I wouldn't have had a chance to see him coming. He got the ticket, of course. They asked me if
I was hurt. I did a quick check -- no bones sticking out, no blood squirting anywhere, and I could see OK once I found
my glasses. They drove us to the police station. I was just 3 blocks away from my Gramma's house, who had been
watching my 1 1/2 yr old little boy, so I just walked over there. Those were way before the days of 5-point child
restraint seats. I've thanked God ever since that he wasn't in the car with me at the time. I had a headache, but
figured, "No wonder!" and called my husband, who came and picked us up and took us home. It wasn't until a
few weeks later that I realized the headache never went away, and I had more aches and pains as time went on. Before
the days of MRI's and CAT scans, all we had to rely on were X-rays and the understanding and experience of the doctors.
I had increasing problems with chronic pain, but life goes on. I got through nursing school, had another baby, and
worked for 34 years as an RN. But as the years went by, tick-tock, my pain became a monster and I had to quit work.
It took Social Security 3 years to accept my application for disability, and since I was in my 50's anyway, they just
gave me Medicare, and have counted me as retired and disabled. I won't even go into the misery my daily life can be --
horrible pain, inability to ambulate, unable to leave my home. A few years ago, I had a series of tests, including an
MRI, EMG's, EEG's, etc. It turns out that I had 3 ruptured discs in my back and neck. Spinal stenosis.
Osteoarthritis. Degenerative disk disease. Sciatica problems. I've had several surgeries over the years. Two were
experimental, but I was at a point where I was ready to try anything. Unfortunately, they didn't help me. There's no
way of knowing exactly *when* the back injuries occurred, only that they were old injuries, and got worse as I got
older. Of course, when I found out exactly what the physical injuries were, I could trace it all back to that
accident. The accident in which I said I was "OK," and the police didn't even suggest going to the ER to
check me out. At the very least, back then, they knew about whiplash injuries, and I should have been treated for
that. My life could have been so different if I had received medical treatment that day. I've done the best I could
with the hand I was dealt, but I admit that I do feel cheated at times. Please, please -- go to the hospital's
emergency department. You won't be sorry to find out that you're really OK. But you will be very, very sorry if you
find out later that you are NOT OK. I'll keep you in my prayers. René "Louise"

Ok, I'll see what I can find out about some of the nearby shops. There is a great yarn shop and a nice dress shop in a
little mall on the main street. http://www.crazygirlyarnshop.com/index2.html In that same mini mall is an ice cream
shop, and a little shop whose owner bought out the Muscatine button factory stock several years ago. She has a lot of
neat pins, etc made from the buttons. KJ "Susan Laity Price" <slpdesigns@speakeasy.net> wrote in

You are right... BOM is block of the month. Each person does their own thing. In their own fabrics. In their own
time. They don't send or receive anything. The patterns (traditional pieced, appliqué and paper pieced). You can do
all... some or any combination. No penalties for not finishing if life interrupts. It is a "cyber" group
project in that pictures are shared and conversations are shared... and in the end you have a quilt that commemorates
your 2006-07 participation in RCTQ. If you scroll down in the posts.... you can see the links to all previous BOMS for
the year. So if you have the time and the inclination ... you can join in at any time! Hope that makes sense! Kate

Posted by Anonymous on Thu Aug 31, 2006 8:46 PM    Post subject: September BOM!

While I have a moment of breathing room, and I'm thinking about it, I thought I'd put them up! September's patterns are
at the end of the message... Enjoy! Posting for Danielle: How this BOM works is I will post block patterns each month
near the beginning of each month. One is pieced, one appliqué and one paper pieced. It is up to you which one (or
ones) you would like to do. You will work at your own pace over the course of each month. You keep your blocks. You
do not mail them to me. At the end of the year you will have twelve blocks to set into a quilt. You keep the quilt.
You do not mail it to me (unless you really feel the need to give me this gift!). You will then have your very own
2006-2007 RCTQ BOM quilt. When I announce a month's block patterns, I will also include the previous months' as well so
if you decide to join along the way you will have all the blocks. Pieced blocks and paper pieced blocks will be
12" in size whenever possible and appliqué blocks will be whatever I can find that is available. Feel free to size
up/down if you so chose. This BOM will run from April 2006 through May 2007. This is how the schedule breaks down:
==============================================================April 2006 - March 2007: Monthly blocks April 2007:
Completing the Top (setting, sashing, borders, etc.) May 2007: Completing the Quilt (quilting, binding, labeling, etc.)
- Done! Marcia Hohn has a pin rating on her site (www.quilterscache.com) that rates the level of difficulty of her
block patterns. One pin blocks are fairly simple and they increase in difficulty as the number of pins increase. I
will start with one pin blocks and increase our difficulty as we go so that we are challenged, but not overwhelmed! I
also consider myself a fairly novice quilter, and these will all be blocks I would be willing to try (well, maybe not

quilt a bit tomorrow as well, and he may sleep at my feet like Paisley used to do. I think it will be good for both of
us. my heart goes out to you, hubby and Kirby.[/quote:808a9dba8a] julia

Dear Alice, sharing your sadness as I read this moving tribute to your little girl. I hope your day of sharing the
loneliness with Kirby will ease your heart. Tell him about all the lovely times you shared with Paisley before he was
born. No, he won't understand the words, perhaps, but he will in some way know that a very important event has taken
place and it is his task to help you through it. {{Alice}} .. In message
