It is possible to make a quilt without any handwork; everything can be done on the sewing machine. Piecing and applique
are, of course, done a block at a time. For your first quilt, start with something small and simple. Some of the Quilt
in a Day books are good for beginners, because the instructions are very detailed. Their Log Cabin, Irish Chain, Trip
Around the World, Rail Fence are all especially good for beginners. You can quilt on your regular home machine, but
large quilts do get bulky and hard to handle. There are a number of techniques for reducing the bulk. Besides the
books & websites others have mentioned, you might want to take a look at "Machine Quilting in Sections"
by Marti Mitchell. She's gives several techniques for reducing the bulk of a large quilt; most of the ideas are
documented in other places, but I haven't seen anything else that describes all of them in one place. I've used a
couple of her techniques -- before I bought the book. I've documented one such project at

Something like that is also described in Sharon Pederson's "Reversible Quilts" book, but I still haven't tried
it (maybe you can find it at your local library). I will try it next month when I take a class with her though! When I
first read your message, I read it a bit like an AA introduction, and had to laugh. I think a lot of us probably
shopped and acquired a lot of books and supplies before we took the plunge and started quilting. Lynn Sharon &

There are several methods of quilting as you go. Here are links that have descriptions of several methods. Please note
that while I reseached this a while back, I have not tried all of them, nor do I have any of these books on the subject.
* With this method, individual blocks or sections of a quilt can be done. It does require some hand work on the back.
Georgia Bonesteel's series of books, already mentiioned by Patti. http://www.secretsof.com/content/624
http://www.acornhillquilts.com/quiltasyougo.pdf * A method that requires no hand sewing. The batting in one section is
separate from the batting in another section. In the shown example, the quilting was done across strips of blocks that
were sewn together. http://community.webshots.com/album/547387259nozWsW * There is a variation on the previous one, but
for some reason I cannot find the link for it this morning. First the blocks are sewn together in strips (width or
length of the quilt). A single section is quilted, but not to the edges. The batting for the next section is sewn to
the batting in the already quilted section. The top strip for the next section is sewn to the top of the already
quilted section. The backing strip for the next section is sewn to the bottom of the already quilted section. The next
section is smoothed, basted and quilted (if it is not the outer edge of the quilt, do not quilt to the edges). Repeat
as needed. * A sashing on the back covers the seams. This sashing is machine sewn and shows on the front.
http://www.treadleon.net/quiltshop/joiningblocks/joining.html * Betty Cotton developed a different method, as shown on
her web site. The result is a reversible quilt, that has some three dimensional ridges. Betty appeared on "Sewing
with Nancy". I think there were three episodes on her "Pinetree" quilt. http://www.quiltyard.com/ *
Julie Olson has a method that uses Steam-a-Seam 2 and a bias tape maker that is described in her book.
http://tinyurl.com/ecw6p I'm sure there are others, as quilters tend to be so innovative. Bev in TX Sharon & Jack

Welcome to you Sharon Yes, the method of completing individual blocks and sewing them together is quite a well-known
one. There are several books on the subject. The ones I know of (without hunting too far in my pieces of paper with
notes on!) are by Georgia Bonesteel. The one I have is called 'Lap Quilting Lives'; but I'm sure there is an earlier
one. There are several methods of joining the blocks - there is no single correct way. I hope you'll get lots of help
with online sites, from folk here, and have a great time making your first quilt. Start simple and small, and you have
far less chance of getting frustrated. Have fun. .. In message

Hi, Alice, I used to live in Deltona (just down the road from DeLand) and I took my first quilting class at Judy's shop
in DeLand! I agree it is a sweet shop and the folks there are great. Please tell them Donna said "Hello"!

Welcome to the group! As Patti said, quilting can be life-changing. I think that is a very big understatement!!!!! What
great people I have met through quilting. What have you done so far? Do you have any pictures to share? QI's? I have 2

I've taught occasional classes in schools where the 1008 and its precursors were HAMMERED! The Old Sewing Machine Guy
I got to for my machines says they get serious abuse, sometimes don't get serviced for years (he does a lot of school
machine servicing), and still come up smiling. If I ever need to buy a back-up machine (I can't see it happening
soon, not with 13 machines in the house!) that's first on my list! :) At the moment I use a HV Lily 550 bought in
1999, and have a Viscount 2000 (mid 80's vintage all metal machine) as my main back-up. When/if that dies, I'll be
saving for a 1008. The quilting table was invented for quilters, but has a lot more uses. As a dress and costume maker
I often have large bridal skirts or heavy costumes to support, and the quilting table really does help. It also
helped enormously with projects like the 4 poster bed I dressed, and the 3 pairs of matching curtains, and the curtains
for my own dining room. I have living room and bedroom curtains to do in the next year, and the quilting table will be
a great help there, too. Another thing I find a great help is my rolling Ikea basket drawers with the desktop on them:
I can shove this up against the work bench next to the machine and sit in the angle of the L this forms, and have a
large item supported beside me as well as beside and behind the machine. This lessens the danger of a heavy skirt or
curtain falling to the floor and dragging the machine with it. -- Kate XXXXXX R.C.T.Q Madame Chef des Trolls Lady

Hi Jessamy Oh, you sound like me...I, too, hate how slow knitting is in comparison to crochet. Of course, my knitting
skills have suffered terribly because of it! Michelle and this is why I "can't" knit anymore - when I was 14
I knitted a 5 colour jacquard pattern I made up as I went along jumper (US sweater) for my teddybear, small needles was
fine and I didn't yet know about crochet or I would have done that instead LOL the wrap for my sister is almost done -
2 more skeins to go - if I skip cleaning I can have it done by lunchtime LOL the I can wash it and put it away till her
birthday just after Christmas then it's back to quilting to get the latest design made up for the magazine. -- Jessamy

I've had several requests to let everyone know - Cars fabric is finally trickling back in. The blue fleece is in stock,
green is on its way and the cottons are all in or will be here in the next week. We do have the Mater/Lightning panels.
Cottons are $5.15 per yard, fleece is $7.25 per yard and only actual shipping is charged. Plese let your friends know
as apparently the manufacturer has been bombarded by the number of orders for the Cars line. http://www.kaboodles.com

[/quote:65a6c0b641] You might want to check with Springmaid/Wamsutta if you're needing such fabric in large
quantities--- by the bolt I mean. I just bought 10 yards of white Springmaid 200 count pima cotton for making pillow
cases and it's beautiful with a very nice hand. Almost all the online quilt shops now carry 100-120" wide fabric
for backings but, (1) rarely for $3-4/yd; (2) definitely not 200 thread count since it is quilt fabric though it is
usually very high quality fabric (200 count does not needle very well); (3) a few people have noticed a reduction in
the quality of wide fabrics from a couple manufacturers so I would definitely suggest swatching it first to see if it
meets your specifications. Search under "quilt backing" and you'll find tons of references. I've made
comforter covers from sheets and quilting fabrics (including the wide backings)--- all 100% cotton. In all honesty, I
prefer the quilt fabrics that are lighter because many high thread count sheets make the comforters just too darn
heavy and you feel like you're sleeping under a rock. Now it is possible to get lighter weight, high thread count
sheets but they are almost always vastly more expensive. Phae -- I fear me you but warm the starved snake Who,

don't. IM(NS)HO, high thread count sheets are more likely to give problems (often tension problems, loopy knots on the

causes a hesitation in the stitch, which makes the stitch not form correctly or not form at all. -- Kathy A.

Some sheets have a very high thread count. That can SOMETIMES make hand quilting a bit harder, but by machine
(domestic SM?) it shouldn't be too bad. Many sheets are poly/cotton blends, but if you are happy with the feel and
look - go for it! Check that the weight of the fabric is similar to the fabrics in the top, use a new needle for
the quilting and good thread, and you shouldn't have any significant problems. Remember - there are no Quilt Police!

I would first check and see what the cotton ratio is to polyester. If your top is 100% cotton I would use a 100%
backing for the best quilting results and best appearance. Rhoda (about to come out of recovery from totalling my car

well.... if they are pretty why not use them in the front? ;-) I have done that before and also used sheets and old

Howdy! Welcome to all the new posters/quilters/friends. It's been a while since anyone posted the FAQs so I'll start
and anyone else can add to this. Thanks to those from whom I'm copying. <g> Introduction to RCTQ : Welcome to
RCTQ, a usenet discussion group of quilters. We want to read all about your quilting activites, and welcome questions.
We may even come up with some helpful answers! But we do have a few requests, to keep this NG moving along. We ask that
you do not post pictures here, but we love to click on links to see your quilts elsewhere. Please, no advertising
.rec.crafts.textiles.marketplace is the appropriate place for ads. Do your best to remember to put OT in the subject
line of off topic posts. Try to remember to trim the original post to the most relevant bits. This is a short overview
of the ettiquette of this group, for a more detailed version please go to:
http://scican2.scican.net/haxton/RCTQ/FAQ/index.htm What is a Hug, and how do I contribute? Hugs are quilts made by
this group to help someone through a life altering event, and let them know how much we care. Karen, Queen of Squishies,
maintains a Hug list. When a Hug quilt is needed someone will contact Karen, and she in turn sends an email to everyone
on the Hug List with instructions and color preferences, date due, and the reason for the Hug. Its always your choice to
participate or not. Hugs can be made without going through Karen and the list as well. Anyone is welcome to start a Hug,
when they feel the need is enough. A very touching explanation of Hugs will follow in post in this thread. What is a
Squishie? A squishie is an envelope that comes to you, thats slightly fat and squishie. It can be a bit of fabric
someone knows you'll love, or a birthday surprise, the main thing is that when a squishie comes in the mail it makes you
feel like smiling. The same thing happens when you send them out, oddly enough! When thanking someone for a squishie
please try to contact them privately, off the list. If you arent able to most of us don't mind sharing in the joy of a
public thank you. A follow up post with a more eloquent explanation will follow this post. What is a Thunkie? Its
similar to a squishie but it can thunk instead of squish and hold interesting things related to quilting, like chocolate
or special things we quilters find indespensible for quilting. What are all those abbreviations? LQS Local quilt
store TSWLTH The store we love to hate aka Joann fabrics. DH, DS, DD, DSM Dear Husband (or dratted, danged etc.) Dear
Son or Dear Sister, Dear Daughter, Dear Sweet Mother. S.E.X. we use this manner of spelling to discourage trolls from
seeing it... it means Stash Enhancement eXpedition or fabric shopping! What is the Directory or how do I get
someone's address? A directory of everyone who chooses to be in it is updated two times a year. Watch the newsgroup for
posting about the next update. Only people who are listed in the directory are allowed to have it. No one is allowed to
give the information in the directory out to anyone who isnt in it. Not everyone chooses to be in the directory, so how
do you get someone's address? Ask them for it. Its ok, it wont spoil the surprise if you wait till they forget you
asked. Or, ask someone else to ask the person if its ok to share their address with you. Be sneaky. Its ok. Trolls
and flame wars... what are they and what can be done about them? Trolls come to groups to try to stir up trouble. The
best advice is ignore them. Its fun to poke at them or treat them as legitimate posters but they thrive on attention.
Flame wars are discussions that get out of control and angry words are hurled about with abandon. Its easy to get caught
up in the heat and say things that are regretted later. We all have bad days. All of our words are open to
interpetation, lets all try to give people the benefit of the doubt and believe the best of them and their posts. How
do I find an old post? Go to http://groups.google.com.pk/group/rec.crafts.textiles.quilting?hl=en or use
<http://tinyurl.com/rab3> and use the search option, remembering to use the "look in this group only"
function. If you still cant find the information you're looking for then feel free to ask the group. ...Thanks to
Diana Curtis for this version of the FAQs. Ragmop/Sandy

here let us see theirs before the quilt top is made. You can join Web Shots, Yahoo, or another free picture website and
post your pictures online, then let us all know where they are. Have you tried applique yet? There are a lot of
methods of applique so you will probably be able find one you enjoy doing. So far I haven't found a method that I don't
like, but I haven't tried them all yet. One of the good things about applique is that I don't have to worry about points
all coming out perfect. It's fun too. Debra in VA See my quilts at http://community.webshots.com/user/debplayshere

I made on last Christmas that I cheated and bought as a panel. But it was just 25 squares that made pockets on the
backing. Mine was a Christmas Tree with various tree decorations as the pockets. But you could use any backing then
the pockets could co ordinate, in the style that you want. Anyhow the pockets were all sewn 1/4 in under on the top,
and pressed 1/4 in on the other three sides, then sewn down. After the pockets were placed on the quilt recieved its
backing and binding etc. I recall hating those pockets after about 12 though lol Carissa --

I'm not so big on Santa. I'm looking for patterns that are more religious in nature. While I'm not yet sure if I can
