Welcome to you Sharon Yes, the method of completing individual blocks and sewing them together is quite a well-known
one. There are several books on the subject. The ones I know of (without hunting too far in my pieces of paper with
notes on!) are by Georgia Bonesteel. The one I have is called 'Lap Quilting Lives'; but I'm sure there is an earlier
one. There are several methods of joining the blocks - there is no single correct way. I hope you'll get lots of help
with online sites, from folk here, and have a great time making your first quilt. Start simple and small, and you have
far less chance of getting frustrated. Have fun. .. In message

[quote:cbc3611d3c]Hi - my name is Sharon, and I've never made a quilt. My SIL and I tried, several years ago - a BOM,
with no sewing. Instead, you fused a "picture", then outlined everything with a blanket stitch. Well, by the
time we got the thing fused, I needed a hammer and pliers to get a needle through the fused layers. That ended our
attempt at quilting. I've acquired a several books on quilting over the years, and always drool over the pictures, but
never go any further, for several reasons, primarily health - I can't do a lot of hand work. But, the other day I saw
an article about making blocks and completing them individually - right through the backing, and then assembling the
quilt. Unfortunately, I was in a hurry or something, because I don't have any idea where I saw it. Now the big
question - does anyone recall seeing anything like this? Thanks (and I'm not usually this ditzy, honest) Sharon

Posted by Sharon Harper on Mon Nov 06, 2006 10:49 PM    Post subject: never tell a quilter.....

it's too expensive. A new rug that is. While shopping for DD1s new bedroom suite I found what I thought was a quilt
being used as a rug which would have tied her new stuff in with her old stuff perfectly. At a cost of $300 it was a
bit too pricey (even if he did say it was made of leather - I would have said cheap suede). It was white background
with appliqued blue and chocolate circles. Fairly simple design, just need to find the time to dig through stash to
find appropriate colours and then find time to make it. I have 3 weeks til furniture arrives.....and about 7 weeks
until christmas!! And yes I'm still working on the nightmare quilt and can see the end. Who knows - it could be done
by Christmas too!!! But I ain't tellin y'all which year - ROFLOL! -- Sharon from Melbourne Australia (Queen of Down

The cutest "quilt cookies" I have seen were simple square sugar cookies. Dough had been shaped into a long
tube but square instead of round. Once cookie dough was cold it would slice easily. After cookies were baked they were
frosted to look like different patchwork patterns. The colors were better than you would achieve with colored dough and
you could have more variety. Frosting would be a fun project to do with a friend or two. Working together in the kitchen
is like sitting around the quilt frame. Susan

You can also paint the designs on unbaked cookies. There are several ways to make paint: - Combine an egg yolk with 1/4
teaspoon water; stir until smooth. Stir in food coloring. - Add food coloring to a small amount of evaporated milk. -
Mix dry powdered milk with water to a paint-like consistency and add food coloring. - Mix cornstarch and water to a
paint-like consistency and add food coloring. Use a paintbrush to paint designs on unbaked cookies. The egg yolk paint
gives brighter, clearer colors, with a bit of a yellow cast. The milk paint colors will be somewhat softer. I have used
both the egg yolk and the powdered milk paint with regular liquid food coloring. I suppose you could get more intense
colors with paste food coloring, like cake decorators use. Julia in MN Susan Laity Price wrote: [quote:fc44d2f271]The

Fun project! Relatively painless too. It's great having something to sew just for fun and sanity, with no pressure. My
sanity project during our last move was to start at the beginning of the Better Homes & Gardens 501 Blocks book.
Made about 90 4.5" blocks out of the Scrap Basket. DH commented that he now understood my patchwork obsession: it
gave me an illusion of being able to control something. Perceptive man! Anyhow, they are on the WIP shelf and
occasionally get added to. Currently, setting 8 X 11 of these blocks would give me a baby-size quilt. I'm waiting for
the odds to improve! Roberta in D "KI Graham" <kigraham@shaw.ca> schrieb im Newsbeitrag

Just a thought -was the fabric pre-washed? (The fabric where the ink faded.) Seems like some of the ink would only
penetrate the sizing, which would disappear with the first wash. I also iron permanent ink to set. Roberta in D

pens on HUG blocks for ages and have just "ironed" the blocks to "heat set" the ink previously.

it in hot water with dish soap and noticed fading in the writing. HELP! 2. I am a complete novice in phototransferring

Explanation: Recently confronted with two of my 6 cousins marrying (one last weekend, at the last minute practically,
and the other in next few weeks) I had to come up with *something* to do as a wedding gift that I could continue on as
the others come to that event in their lives (I'm the oldest of that generation on that side of the family and heavens
to betsy if the gifts aren't pretty level and the age span goes on and on, etc. anyway, trust me when I say I *had* to
choose to do something consistent). My idea (already in motion so no going back) is to have the interested guests write
a short message to the bride and groom, pass it on to me, and then I re-write the messages on fabric and create, as I
put it in my explanation to the guests, a quilted gift of love (worded such because the amount of messages will vary
widely among the different cousins' weddings and thus the quilted gifts of love could range from wall hangings to full
quilts, etc). I typed and copied forms up, pre-addressed envelopes with my address, etc. At last weekend's wedding I
got the groom's sister to assist by handing out information to the guests who were't in my family because I knew none of
those people. I'm not even trying to keep this a secret from the cousins because that would just be more hassle than it
is worth. This past wedding was very small (*maybe* 45 people), the next one is probably going to be very large
comparably (I've heard upwards of 200 invitees). I've given the guests a one-month-from-the-wedding deadline to return
the things to me. I figure this way, my pigma pens stay safe, I'm not carting around fabric, etc. to all these events
-- and I can space out the messages as appropriate at the time of construction instead of being stuck with a set pre-cut
square of fabric. I want to make sure it will be something that LASTS with the messages on it but can still be cleaned.
(embroidery not an option) The recent wedding will most likely be a wall hanging. To the best of my knowledge, I was
the only person properly positioned to get a picture of the newly married couple coming "back up the aisle"
(outdoor wedding but still, the portion of the ceremony that would have been considered that) and I want to use one of
them (digital currently) as the center of their WH and have the messages written around the photo. Even the person
videotaping the wedding wasn't able to catch that as I was -- he was behind them. The upcoming wedding will probably
result in either multiple WHs or an actual quilt (heaven help me, a project as yet unattempted by me) and probably no
pictures transferred (too large a project as it is) So, that's why I needed to ask those questions.....the final gifts
in all cases are intended to be basic muslin (for photos, messages, etc. as deemed appropriate) and the other fabrics
involved for sashing or relief will be the couple's wedding colors. As I get into construction (after these other
questions/issues are taken care of) you'll be hearing from me with questions about batting, backing, etc. TIA, Tricia

Howdy! Congrats on solving a couple of problems, Pol. I keep a piece of masking tape on the edge of the quilt hoop
when handquilting. Makes it easy to pick up stray hairs, loose threads and snips, bits of lint, keeps the quilt top
cleaner while I'm working on it. It's these simple tips that are so helpful. ;-) Ragmop/Sandy -- I should invest in

solved two needs. I like to have a pin cushion on the top of the arm of my SM to hold just a few pins, one or two

holding their hooks, apply one side to the SM and apply a length of velcro to the other sticky side of the strip. Don't
use the hook. Attach the other side of the velcro strip to a pin cushion. Mine is a very simple little pillow made
from blanket fleece. The pin cushion will stay put and can easily be removed if the SM wants to climb in its travel case
for a trip. The 3M sticky strip won't cause magnetic harm to your SM and is possible to remove. It is even possible to
remove without damaging your fingers and nose if you follow the directions. (Ask Charlotte about that one.) Now for
grabbing snipped threads - I also put a 3M strip on the left end of the SM. I attached a rough piece of velcro to the
remaining sticky side of that one. I can simply pat a piece of scrap batting on it. Cut threads like to cling to
batting. The threads wipe off easily enough when you have a fair-sized rat's nest or you can just replace the batting
with a new scrap. No afiliation. Always hopeful. Thank you all very much for your contributions to these solutions.

One of my baby quilts, the one that got probably the most enthusiastic response, was a simple Friendship Star. This is
basically a 9-patch with 5 plain squares and 4 half-square triangle squares, which make a 4-pointed star. For the
center of each block, I used a little printed teddy bear. Half the blocks had one background color and half a
contrasting color. The star points were cream. IIRC it was 20 blocks set 4 X 5, and the blocks were 6.5". Plus a
narrow inner border and wider outer border. But of course you could make your blocks bigger or use more of them.

<http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1/baby.html>. Disregard the first one, since it was a time-consuming piece.
However, the others weren't bad. Pick a simple pattern (4-patch? 9-patch? The baby will love it!) and do it all by
machine. It should go quickly, since it doesn't have to be large. Best of luck! -- Sandy in Henderson, near Las Vegas

check www.applewd.com the august block is still online for free download. that explains what it sounds to me like you're
doing. i could be wrong but worth a wee check. increase the view to 400%, yes 4 hundred, so you can see how the lines
across work. its simple when you see how it works. hope that helps. cheers from the sunny south pacific winter, jeanne

I went to a wedding last week and there was a vintage friendship quilt hanging in the fellowship hall's hallway. It was
very nicely framed and under glass so it couldn't be damaged by anyone passing by, and it was in a shady spot to avoid
sun damage. The blocks were 12 inch album blocks done in all solids and set in a simple straight setting. All the
blocks were signed with embroidery stitches and a few had little embroidered motifs (tiny birds or a small flower) added
to the signature piece. I never did find a date on the quilt, but it was a nice surprise in my day. Debra in VA See my

My mother's church just celebrated their Centennial, and had a quilt made by one of the members to commemmorate it. I
saw it in-progress, and it was really cool! My mom had dug up old pictures of pastors and the church itself from years
and years ago, and each was photo-transferred to cloth, and added around the border of the quilt. I can't wait to see
the finished product hanging in the church when I go to Indy this Christmas! -- Wendy

found the pattern online and read thru it. they 'trim' the sqs back to 6". how about 4 x 2.5=10 plus an extra half
inch for trimming(10.5inch start), just in case your hst isnt poifect. then trim as they did. should work from my
reading of the pattern. http://www.mccallsquilting.com/golden/mg29_pattern/ delectable mountains is a fav of mine too,
it has so many possible layouts and variations for a simple block. tho that is often the case. simple lends itself to
more possible end results. varying the size, colour and which way it lays gives you much to play with. if you've got EQ
you can play with it there both with size and fabrics/colours, even your own fabrics could be scanned in, tho you can
also add new colourways with the fabrics already in EQ, which is often easier and just as useful. have fun. jeanne --

[quote:977eb68204]Help! I'd really like some assistance.... I'd like to make a quilt using a "whirligig"
blocks pattern (or, as I have seen it before, called delectable mountains). The pattern in the Feb. 2003 issue of
McCall's Quilting (page 53) calls for 6.5 inch squares sewed into half square triangles and cut into 1.5 inch strips. I
seem to have seen this in a large size... I'd like to be able to cut four stips that were 2.5 inches wide. I suppose
there's some mathematical formula for making those blocks bigger but it certainly is over my head! Can anyone tell me
how much larger to make the two blocks? I think this is just a nifty pattern using high contrast fabrics and my
daughter is asking for a quilt of 30's fabrics so this would be just the ticket. THANKS! [/quote:977eb68204]

Maybe when I get back I'll get photos of mine and get them to Teri to post! Enjoy! Dannielle How this BOM works is I
will post block patterns each month near the beginning of each month. One is pieced, one appliqué and one paper pieced.
It is up to you which one (or ones) you would like to do. You will work at your own pace over the course of each month.

then have your very own 2006-2007 RCTQ BOM quilt. When I announce a month's block patterns, I will also include the

You are right... BOM is block of the month. Each person does their own thing. In their own fabrics. In their own
time. They don't send or receive anything. The patterns (traditional pieced, appliqué and paper pieced). You can do
all... some or any combination. No penalties for not finishing if life interrupts. It is a "cyber" group
project in that pictures are shared and conversations are shared... and in the end you have a quilt that commemorates
your 2006-07 participation in RCTQ. If you scroll down in the posts.... you can see the links to all previous BOMS for
the year. So if you have the time and the inclination ... you can join in at any time! Hope that makes sense! Kate

Leslie, thanks for thoughts. Someday I might get another dog, but right now its just to painful. Good luck with your

Howdy! A piece of that solid color (purple, green, pink) connects to that Dresden plate petal to match the other
side, square them off/make a nice straight edge there so you can insert the corner piece. Then a yellow fat ice cream
cone for that corner would finish it and make it coordinate back to those yellow centers in the full plates. Doesn't
matter if the yellow matches what's already there; it's such a scrappy border that being a little "off" on the
color would work just fine. Marissa, you've come this far in making this old top "authentic", you can do
this simple bit of border. Good luck! Ragmop/Sandy On 7/21/06 9:25 AM, in article e9qo4c$c29$1@news.tamu.edu,

Posted by René on Wed Nov 01, 2006 9:54 PM    Post subject: Re: Aaaaargh! Bad Quilting Day Question

I'm assuming that the snowball blocks are the "simple" blocks. If you feel compelled to re-do anything,
those would be the ones to work on. But I like the idea of leaving them "as is" and laying all the blocks out
as previously planned. Does the difference look good? Does it now have a "star" block effect? If so, I'd
just leave them and acknowledge that you designed your own quilt pattern and give it with pride. If you really can't
stand it, make new snowball blocks. Put aside the other ones for another quilt. I have dozens of half-finished
projects that changed mid-stream and now need a re-design. I can't stand to toss them, but know that they'll
eventually come to some good, even if it's just for a picnic-on-the-ground quilt or for the new puppy. Good luck with
whatever you decide to do! René <countryone77@yahoo.com> wrote in message

to make it easier to play with colors. When I sewed the snowball blocks, I used the simple method of cutting small
squares for each corner, sewing on the diagonal, and removing the excess triangle from the seam allowance side. My LQS
recommended leaving the background fabric intact, which I did (though it seems a bit heavy to me with those corners left
in). My trouble started when I cut those corner squares using the rotary cutting instructions in EQ5, which should only
have been used if I cut those squares in half on the diagonal and then sewed them to the 9-1/2" square. That is, I
cut the corner squares 3-7/8", when I should have cut them 3-1/2". Unfortunately, I completed all of the
snowball blocks before I realized that there was a problem, so now the snowball block corners are too big to meet the
9-patch block points. I see two solutions to the problem: 1) Remove the existing triangles from the snowball blocks and
replace them with the correctly sized ones. This would entail a long trip to my LQS to purchase more of the same fabric
(presuming they have some more). It would also take extra time to redo those corners, which could be a problem due to a
time constraint. 2) Just accept that I have a new design, which has small jags in the corner designs where the blocks
meet. If it were not for the time constraint, I would lean toward fixing it (I'm a bit of a perfectionist). What do
you think? Thanks, Bev in TX [/quote:1b253c1c68]

I'd be inclined to fix them. Don't re-do your existing blocks, just buy enough fabric to do both background and
corners. So if the store doesn't have exactly the same, you might be able to find a similar fabric that would blend
well and add interest to your quilt. You can surely find some other quilt to use up the "odd" snowballs.
